an essay i'd read in high school i can't remember

it's weird i'm thinking of this now, almost 20 years later, but i'd love to read it again. it was Senior Lit. class and the teacher started class by reading what he called an editorial; it was from the Victorian era, i think, talking about the food shortage in London and a way to solve it. it talked about how the streets were overrun with 'vermin' ( Read more... )

I hope you're not freaked out - I am over here because I saw you'd done me the kindness of visiting my journal. I'm wondering if your essay was Jonathan Swift's blunt "A Modest Proposal". The proposal was, at one stroke, to get rid of the surplus Irish population and to deal with the threat of famine - by selling the young children for meat. It's grim and blackly funny and a masterpiece of satire, and it sounds as if it could be what you're looking for.
