That's not the most interesting thing in my life! I also finished "Le Comte de Monte-Cristo" yesterday, which is something like 1400 pages long (in two volumes) but is a totally excellent book which, if you have not read it, should be required reading for everyone who likes tawdry tales of revenge, romance, closet lesbians, and a main character ( Read more... )

Although I have not read the French version (a tragic lack indeed), it's still one of my favorite sort-of-swashbuckling adventure books. Although I don't remember the closet lesbians. Maybe I was too young to notice that the last time I read it. I do like how the protagonist is so tremendously flawed (as you say), and the ridiculously complicated ways that he ends up manipulating everyone. Much fun.

Haha. Remember Eugenie Danglars and how everyone talks about how masculine she is, and how she runs off dressed as a boy with her "friend" Louise (who is mysteriously -always- in Eugenie's room)? But I could see how that could get lost on younger readers. :)
