It's Not You, It's Me:  Breaking Up With Technology

Ever feel that all of the LJ-ing, Facebook-ing and Twittering is getting to be too much?  You should read this. This is a very cool article about technology overload.

I post on one forum (GW), belong to one list (Pepe's Yahoo group) and have Live Journal....I steadfastly refuse to have Myspace, Facebook or Twitter....my forum is for general fun and games when I feel like it...my list is for my fanfic pairing and my Live Journal is my diary for me and my friends - and by friends I count many as real life friends now, having met a proportionate amount at Cons and elsewhere...

I love the technological age but I've always tried to use it sensibly...I got burned a few years ago by getting addicted to msn and taking on the responsibility of running a forum with, I thought, good friends....I also saw my son get addicted to World of Warcraft for 2 years which screwed his life and health up considerably...he was lucky he got to Uni and discovered that a social life in the real world is far more benefit to you than one on line...

Great article....again it's "All things in moderation" isn't it?

ou're right, it is about all things in moderation. I do the GW Forum for fandom stuff occasionally, a Yahoo group for Jack based fanfic and LJ for social for the most part. Nothing else and even that gets to be a bit much sometimes.

I like the advantages of technology for keeping in touch and I think my friends and family have gotten used to my tech free periods when I go 'off-line'. I don't answer phone or emails for about a week just to clear my head. It happens a couple of times a year and it's like a vacation. I love it all though it does tend to irk some of my more anal friends. :)

Yeah, it is all a bit much, isn't it. I checked out Twitter and have really pretty much ignored it. It's my LJ--which, like Deeds, encompasses people I've met and consider true friends--and Ikariam for me.

My cell phone is the greatest thing I own. I love my laptop, but being able to reach hubs directly or check in on G no matter where I am is EXTREMELY nice. Plus it has other great tools like navigation/GPS for when we're out of town. A good friend has an iPhone and I think if I had that I'd have to use some sort of technology-insulin. LOL There IS such a thing as too much, and I'd be on it ALL THE TIME.

I am trying hard to NOT buy a Blackberry although I would love to have one. I know for a fact that I do not need to be that connected. :) I love my cell phone but on my own terms. I left it at home the other day and almost had a coronary when I realised it. Half way to my appointment and I almost turned around to go back and get it. Needless to say, I lived, LOL but it was nerveracking. No, I do not need a Crackberry. It wouldn't be pretty. Not pretty at all.

I have to say that I could NOT survive without my Zen....my music collection is so important to me....and my new toy of my Sony E Book Reader is becoming almost as important.....to be able to download all my favourite fanfic from the web and put it on there as my "portable library" is just wonderful....I love it and it will go everywhere with me when I travel....

One of the reasons I'm tempted to get a Blackberry is so I can load in my music. I have an I-Pod Nano (first generation) but I don't want to have to carry around two different devices.

I've heard of the E Book but haven't really checked it out. Too afraid I'd get hooked on that as well. :D I also like the feel of the book, the weight of it, the smell of the paper. It's all part of the reading experience for me.

Cool article!

Must admit that I've curtailed my online activities through disinterest (or Efatigue). I've got my LJ, though I'm not as into it as I was. Still play everyday on Birdforum, this is my fave place in the world where I've met so many nice folks (quite a few in RL), and play around on a few games (and their forums).

I don't have a mobile (nick the kids when I need one). Suppose the one thing I couldn't be without is my walkman.

I've never heard of Birdforum. Sounds like a place for bird watchers - is it? I might check it out.

It's amazing how a person can get stuck going to just a few places on the net when there's so much out there. I swing past the same few places every day. My newest sites are video sites that my son told me about - Hulu and Surf The Channel. Bad son - he knows 5'm a TV junkie and now I'm hooked on both of them. I love watching my TV on the computer at my timing and Surf The Channels has all of the classics and them some. Currently, I'm watching BSG from the beginning, two or three eps a night. It's amazing watching it from the beginning knowing what I know now.

I've seen Hulu's commercials, but have yet to go to it. Though thanks for reminding me - I need to watch last week's BSG before tonight's! (And might try Hulu instead of SciFi's Rewind to do it. :D I tend to regularly go to a couple sites myself, like newspapers, the NWS, and a few others, but do appreciate if I want to surf out there, there's much more out there to discover. (Though like with most non-tech things in life, the quality of 'Net sites does vary greatly ( ... )

I would read it, but . . . I'm a little overwhelmed by technology right now and I'm trying to cut back.
