Notes: Their pairing is always so sad that reading about them breaks my heart into pieces. And to think that they always look so happy in the pictures. What the hell... Nocturne. I always imagine the death scene happening at night. Like dusk or something. With the drapes pulled together and the room dimly-lit. Yeah, you get the picture. Again, a too-short drabble.
Nocturne
He watched her as she peacefully lay in bed, her beautiful face serene and void of any pain. Even in the midst of such a crisis, her lips, thin and pale, were curved to a slight smile. The grip he had on her hand for days now tightened, firm but gentle. She was perhaps having a pleasant dream. He choked back a dry sob, only quietly brushing away the stray locks of hair from her face. The gentle ministrations roused her and her eyes fluttered open, a vivid emerald hue in the dark. She turned her head to him and her smile grew.
“I just had the most wonderful dream.” Her voice was almost a whisper, so quiet it almost broke his heart. “Sakura and Touya, they were both happy and everything was all right.”
“That’s good.” He bent over and kissed her forehead, cold against his lips.
“And you were always there with them.” She faltered for a moment and he glanced at her, noting the sadness in her eyes. “Always there… Never failing.”
He was wordless, merely bringing her slender hand to his lips. He knew what she wanted, what she loved. And he knew she could never have it, to stay with them, to be by their side. Her pulse was weakening, her temperature slowly lowering. The doctor had told them it wouldn’t be too long now. They were only counting minutes, seconds. And unlike him, she had accepted it gracefully, with a nod of understanding and a smile.
“Fujitaka-san…” Her voice was as soft as ever but there was that little strength still. He looked up at her, opening his mouth to respond, to reassure her. But she shook her head. No words needed to be said. They both knew.
“I won’t cry.” He kissed for the last time and swallowed the sigh of relief, her last breath, that had left her lips. “I promise.”
