Fermata

“Sometimes, I just don’t get you at all, Lenalee.”

Several times she had been told the same words and several times she had asked herself the reason for it. It was unexpected, she knew that. Strange and ridiculous and random and unpredictable, more descriptions coming from people. Everyone seemed to have issues over it and in spite of knowing the characters involved, they were unafraid to voice out their opinions about it. Most especially her older brother, who would have to thank her yet again for saving his neck.

Then again, it wasn’t as if she never expected such a reaction coming from her friends and family.

“What’s not to get? Most of what I do is pretty much self-explanatory”

“Not this one.”

If she were to be given a single shard of Innocence for every ‘why’ or ‘how’ asked to her, she would’ve collected every single one of it. And it was always, always, always that one inquiry which she could never really give a straight answer to.

“Why would you stay up until 10 in the evening, waiting for a guy who probably had left for another mission without returning here, and that even if he returned, he would probably just chew off your head and call you stupid?”

He’s sullen and bad-tempered. He’s violent and very much hated everything that existed. He would distance himself, from her, from everyone. He would keep everything to himself. He’s apathetic and cold and mean and tactless. He was the type who would leave someone whom he felt was already a burden. He would say whatever he wanted, no matter how brutal or cruel he would seem to be - not like he cared anyway to what people think.

While she would go on all day, listing down every single negative description given by every single person who knew him and ending up still liking him despite it all.

“It’s probably the same reason why you’re staying up until 10 in the evening, trying to keep me company, Lavi. Because we're friends. But in my case, it's different.”

Much, much different.
