Summary: "It's Kanda. Call me Kanda."

Notes: I'm sure that everyone knows the story of Persephone. Taken away by Hades, was fed by six pomegranate seeds and could only return on Earth for six months and had to spend the rest of the year in the Underworld. Yes, yes?

I think we can all agree that Lenalee was similar to Persephone in a sense that she was taken away by the Order from her family [Komui a.k.a. Demeter *shotshotshot*] and all that shiznit. And descriptions of Persephone, being kind-hearted yet strong-willed at the same time, kinda strikes it out.

...Or is it just me having illusions again? I need to run to class now wtf! xDDDD

Persephone

“Hi, are you my new friend?”

His reaction was to step back, stunned and taken aback, upon finding a pair of bright green eyes looking up at him with innocent wonder. Tiny hands, warm and soft, grasped his, shaking them up and down. The girl in front of her looked so small, so frail and yet she managed to tug him forward, to make him stumble as she tried to meet his eyes hidden behind his bangs. Her lips were curved up to a sunny smile, so pure and so full of life, her cheeks tinted with the color of roses.

His Master had called her Lenalee, a child who, like him, came from the East. Who, like him, was deemed also a disciple of God.

Friend. The word was new to him, unfamiliar in his mouth. Friend. He did not consider anyone as friends. Companions, hardly. People who were being forced upon him. And yet this girl, this little girl who didn’t even know his name much more everything else about him, was asking if he was to be her friend. Without a word, he turned his head, averted his eyes, away from her inquisitive gaze. As if she had the power to inspect, to dissect him into tiny pieces until she had learned what she needed to learn.

“She’s not very friendly, is she?” There was a sad tone in her voice, one that stuck him rather apparently. But it wasn’t her tone or her voice that made him look around, glaring darkly at her.

‘She’. A pronoun he suddenly so despised.

“I am not a girl!”

He had wrenched his hands free from hers, utterly irritated, as he felt blood slowly creeping up his neck. And his Master was not helping the situation, his booming laughter hardly comforting. He should’ve expected that, knowing the man for two years now.

He did not know this girl. Nor did he wish to get himself involved with such a ridiculous child, as if he wasn’t a child himself. His wounded ego began to say things, stuff about that stupid girl that even he did not want to think about. Too bright, too sunny, too happy-go-lucky… All those things didn’t seem so bad and yet as he mulled over it, fuming all the same, he realized that he really could never get himself involved with her. They were too different. Just too different.

“Lenalee.”

He unconsciously looked up, the lazy voice that had called belonging to an unfamiliar male several feet away. Tall, intimidating, important. Someone he wouldn’t like. And apparently, someone Lenalee didn’t like as well. Her ramrod back, the tension visible throughout her tiny body, her hands balled into fists. And her expression, almost that of desperation and apprehension. His Master was wordless, smiling as always as he greeted the man, as if unaware of Lenalee.

“Lenalee,” there came the voice again and he fought back a quiet growl that had unconsciously risen up his throat. “It’s almost two. Time for your daily training.”

Lenalee looked around to him, her smile back in place, the desperation gone from her eyes. Like earlier, she walked up to him, took his hands and clasped it between hers, shaking them up and down. However this time, she did not meet his eyes, her head downcast, staring at the stone floor beneath them.

“I’ll be back, okay? This shouldn’t take me long. And when I get back, you should tell me your name.”

Then she let go and walked away, walked to that man, her every step heavy like a prisoner off to the gallows. From the way she looked, she seemed as if she was making terrible peace with herself, as if she had just lost all hope. As if taking that outstretched hand, reaching out for that man, was the way to the oblivion that she could never return from unscathed.

Then he noticed. The bluish pattern around her wrist, concealed by her long sleeves. The seemingly invisible red marks on her neck, hidden from view by her collar. Her deathly paleness.

“It’s Kanda.”

He blurted out in a moment of loss of self-control, his fingernails digging deep into his palms as he clenched his hands into fists. Lenalee looked back at him, her tiny hand already grasped by the man, a glint of surprise in the girl’s green eyes.

“Call me Kanda.”

Her lips rose slightly to a smile, gentle and grateful and genuine. “All right. I’ll see you, Kanda.”
