i read 'the bell jar' in about a day 2 years ago. seriously, one of my all-time favorites.

i've been on a dostoevsky kick lately, so i'd suggest 'notes from underground.' it's short, kinda whiny. love it. :)

I dunno what kind of books you usually like to read, but I just read John Grisham's 'The Innocent Man'. Its the true story of a man convicted of murder and put on death row for a crime he didn't commit. I honestly couldn't put it down.

Oh and on another note.... Newsies coming to Santaluces this weekend. Everytime I drive by the sign I think of you. Maybe I'll have to go see it just for you.

oh man, it is funny you should mention the bell jar. i just read today that julia stiles is playing the lead in the newest screen adaptation of that book.
having read the book, is that a good thing?

yea. that's actually really funny because in "ten things i hate about you" (i used to be obsessed with that movie) julia stiles is actually reading "the bell jar". weiiiird.

but yea about the movie: i think it'll be a great chance for her to show a good range of skill. the main character is commited to an insane asylum but you see her good and her bad and it's from her own point of view, so sometimes she doesn't sound "crazy" because she rationalizes everything to herself perfectly. i literally read the entire thing in 24 hours, it's awesome.

I totally agree with Nikki. Dostoevsky is where it's at. I'm reading "The Brothers Karamazov" right now. I'd definitely suggest starting with "Crime and Punishment" though, if you have the time and haven't read any of his work before. It's a classic.

"On the Road" by Kerouac if you're into the beat thing and you haven't read it already. I finally got to finish it earlier this semester and enjoyed the hell out of it. "Naked Lunch" by William S. Burroughs is just as good.

I read "Breakfast of Champions" by Vonnegut (RIP) on Saturday, not that deep of a plot or in terms of character development, but definitely some solid--and hilarious--satire on America. I know you're in to him, but again, I don't know what you've read.

Agh, I have so many more suggestions but I don't know what style of writing you prefer. What are you looking for?

I want to teach high school english, 11-12th grade and I want to expose myself to a wide range of literature, so basically anything you can recommend, I'm just looking for variety!
