To summarise, Barnaby’s parents were engineers in robotics and androids, and he informs us that they sought to create an android that could protect humans. He had a happy, even idyllic childhood - at least, he remembers it very fondly.
This was shattered when his parents were assassinated in the family home. Barnaby was only a child at the time, and opened the door to find the room on fire, his parents lying dead amidst the flames, and the shadowy figure of their murderer silhouetted amidst the chaos.
Understandably, this event traumatised him deeply, leaving him with vivid nightmares that would follow him even into adulthood. He also carries with him a strong dislike of fire -but beyond that, beyond his fear, Barnaby has sought information about his parent’s murderer ever since. Even as a child, as a teenager, Barnaby tried to learn what he could with only one clue - the ouroboros symbol tattooed on the killer’s hand, the only thing he remembers of his features.
His NEXT powers - a superhuman ability detailed below - developed during his childhood, and as a teenager he studied to become a hero. Taken on by Apollon media, Barnaby became Hero TV’s newest star in his mid-twenties. He was partnered with the veteran hero, Wild Tiger - and their partnership was not a particularly harmonious one.
Over time, they learned how to work together to some degree - in fact, Barnaby even began to put his trust in the other man - but his motivation remained the same: to find the murderer of his parents, find out why he killed them, and bring him to justice.
This end was finally in sight for him - but it seems that, thanks to Somarium, he’ll have more getting in his way than Tiger.
[Personality]Barnaby Brooks Jr. earned the nickname “Bunny” from his partner-in-heroing, Wild Tiger (or Kotetsu Kaburagi), but it’s not a very befitting one.
In fact, there’s very little that seems particularly cute or rabbit-like about Hero TV’s newest commodity.
As something of a celebrity, Barnaby is used to being in the public eye. He maintains a cool, collected persona - he is friendly, but not overly so. He talks about himself, but not in any great depth or detail. He’s kind, and considerate. He always has a small, handsome smile for his fans, he always makes time to chat to them, to take pictures with them, to sign autographs (even on their infant children). He takes a pride in his job and his abilities, but never seems arrogant. He’s intelligent and calm, polite and cordial. His sense of humour leans towards sarcasm and biting comments, but it does exist.
Barnaby’s cool exterior is something he carries through to his work. He’s efficient, diligent, and highly motivated in his work. Rational, logical, and quick thinking, Barnaby puts a lot of stock in strategy and planning - he thinks and calculates quickly to take the most reasonable and effective approach. His neat and fastidious nature also presents itself in his work - he has an eye for detail, something which can prove crucial in such a demanding position. Highly trained and capable, Barnaby is someone who is thinking all the time, measuring and judging situations as they come. He throws himself into his work with a diamond-hard determination to succeed - he sets out to win, every time.
Why is he so driven in his work? In his words, “a true hero never leaves a point behind”. Ambitious and competitive, Barnaby is striving for the position of King of Heroes - and for that, he needs to do more than anyone else, raking in the points to ensure popularity.
But there’s more to Bunny’s motivation than the top spot - in fact, there’s a lot more to Bunny than the surface he shows.
He claims it’s all about the points, but Barnaby shows that he does have a stronger sense of justice than that. More than points, Barnaby has a genuine, deep-rooted desire to help and protect people, and bring criminals and terrorists to justice. But beyond and above that, Barnaby has lived his life hunting for something in particular - the murderer of his parents.
Even as a child, Barnaby was driven by this purpose. It was his raison d’etre - all he remembered of the killer was the tattoo emblazoned upon their hand. With this as his only clue, he’d set out to discover more. For almost twenty years, he’s been focused on this above all else, and his spare time is spent diligently researching every lead he can.
And that’s one major reason why he became a hero, and it’s also why he went without masking himself or changing his name - unlike the other Heroes, Barnaby uses only his own name. It was a way of announcing his presence, a way of pledging his vengeance. It was, in other words, Barnaby’s way of telling the killer I’m coming for you.
He focuses on this end with a rather single-minded determination. In fact, Barnaby can be all-over stubborn. Yes, he’s a clever planner, a capable calculator, but this stalwart adherence to careful forethought can be detrimental, and hold him back at times - sometimes, it’s better to let instinct drive you, and he stands on the opposite end of the scales from his partner, Tiger, in that regard. Actually, they’re on opposite extremes in most cases - Barnaby has difficulty trusting his partner, let alone anyone else. As he sees it, buddying up with Tiger is a necessary evil - a means to an end. At least, this was how it started off between them - work has forced him to warm to the man somewhat, even begin to rely on him, but their differing personalities clash a lot, and Bunny is often grousing at him about his being a liability and therefore holding him back.
Barnaby might play the part of the cool and collected young man - he’s good at it, too - but he’s not the best at maintaining a poker face by any means. Some things manage to crack his calm nature. Tiger is often one of these things, and most of the time it seems like Barnaby is merely tolerating or humouring him.
But something that creates a deeper crack still is news of his parent’s murderer. There’s a lot of emotion he’s been bottling up for two decades regarding that, after all. Barnaby is far more fiery than he lets on, and sometimes, this shines through clear as day.
Haunted by nightmares of his parent’s death, and flickering memories of his childhood, Barnaby isn’t one to let go of things easily. He’ll wave most annoyances away, and his feelings aren’t easily hurt - but Barnaby can definitely hold a grudge when he feels he’s been wronged.
Though he generally seems friendly enough, if somewhat stand-offish, Barnaby holds people at a distance, and his trust is a difficult thing to win. He might be less willing to run into danger headfirst than, say, his idiot partner, but he’s still willing to do what he can for those he cares about.
Bunny can be seen as a counterpart to Tiger. He’s distant, more prone to arrogance, coldly strategic and ever the serious one in the partnership. But for all their differences, they do have striking similarities - they’re both pig-headed stubborn, for a start. They’re both determined, and even though Barnaby would argue it just for the sake of it, they have a similar sense of justice. And, like Tiger, Bunny most assuredly has his heart in the right place.
But his nickname still isn’t very befitting at all.
[Specialties/Abilities]Barnaby is very intelligent, and capable of quickly devising strategies based on logic. Training every day, Barnaby is also highly athletic with a lot of physical capability. He’s strong, quick, and a skilled fighter. He also demonstrates that he knows how to disarm a bomb (though admittedly, he ends up unable to pick between the last two wires, and he and Tiger deal with it by throwing it into the sky, so… :D) and states that he’s trained in other subjects that would be useful for a Hero to know. Barnaby can also drive - rather recklessly, if the situation calls for it - and ride a motorcycle - with or without Kotetsu whining at him from the sidecar.
Barnaby has a NEXT ability - a superhuman power that developed when he was a child - known as Hundred Power. This increases and enhances his physical abilities by one hundred percent for five minutes; during this time, he’s one hundred times stronger, faster, more agile - it allows him to perform pretty incredible feats. However, the drawback of this ability is that it can only be used once per hour.
[Affection] Come at him, bros, though his reaction could vary quite a bit and will seldom be very hospitable. Though he's used to a bit of flirting, he's not the type to reciprocate. His reactions more than that will probably go between swiftly brushing it off, or punching :| unless he's very close to you. Then he might tolerate it. (Unless you're Kotetsu, then he'll definitely punch you.)
[Fighting] They certainly can start a fight, but THIS BUNNY HAS BITE -- he's an able fighter and will defend himself. Of course, he's just a normal human without his NEXT power activated.
[Other Permissions] Generall speaking, go right ahead! If you have something specific in mind, or are dubious about something, just hit me up somewhere and we can discuss it
[Other Facts] Barnaby will, much to his chagrin, be arriving without his hero suit. As Barnaby has always used his real name and shown his face, this isn't a huge issue, but it could put him at a disadvantage.
