I am so glad you managed to get to Italy without too much fuss and bother!
Marble, limestone and tufa have always been a popular building material in Rome, because the stone is easily found and worked. From what I recall, the stone is reused a lot, so a lot of the Vatican is made up from parts of old imperial buildings. The gold leaf is just gaudy, however :)
Saturn was pretty - they have a moving floor in the dome that is quite cute. Unlike Mt John, just a little platform moves, counter-weighted. Everything else was lost in the Rome-glare...
Great to hear you arrived safely and the jetlag wasn't too bad. You will be glad to know that everyone is very successfully procrastinating for next weeks exams, and my room is uncommonly tidy. Have fun. Jeff and myself wait eagerly for the next installment.
