Very good talk this morning on the hunt for extrasolar planets by Debra Fischer of SFSU. I agree with her that the most important factors for determining if a planet is habitable are its mass (retain an atmosphere, oceans, stay tectonically active, etc) and distance from its star (correct degree of heating, etc.). Castelgandolfo, yes! According to the Rome tourism services "The Papal Palace - with astronomical observatory called 'Specula Vaticana' attached - dominates the central Piazza della Libertà; the pontifical gardens of the 17th-century Villa Barberini cover the site of a villa belonging to the Roman Emperor Domitian. The view of the Albano lake is breathtaking." (Between those is your actual mediaeval castle of the Gandolfi family, see also name of town.) Some more history & description here. So many layers.
