What: Harvey Danger's disaffected Christmas song "Sometimes You Have to Work on Christmas (Sometimes)."

Why: In this entry, I failed to include a single song from the current millennium. (The latest was from 1993. Santa needs to bring me a short-term memory.) I'll rectify that by talking up a stellar carol by Seattle's beloved sons, Harvey Danger ( Read more... )

Not considered for inclusion, but highly appreciated nonetheless, was Rage Against the Machine's "Killing in the Name", which this year waged a successful fan-based battle to unseat the latest yuletide dreck from Simon Cowell's The X Factor machine atop the UK Christmas charts. Now that's the Christmas spirit at work.

He probably got tired of people asking why he deserved to be in the Traveling Wilburys.

One poorly mailed royalty check from Xanadu makes it all better, I expect.

I'm undecided on the most beautiful Christmas song, but this Christmas I had the pleasure of watching the most beautiful Christmas movie: "Joyeux Noel". It's a true story about a group of people attempting to be human and sane in the midst of very inhuman and insane activities. I can't think of a more appropriate Christmas theme than that!

Still dreaming of being a spiky-haired rock star,

Wow, that really does sound good. The Christmas Truce is a fascinating event.

Hold everything - I just thought of a newer song that I heard for the first time this Christmas. I bet you never thought you'd hear this one done as a punk cover:

My favorite version of the Hallelujah Chorus is certainly the three-part harmony version by the Roches.

You know, I know that movie-house that this was filmed in:
It's the 'Grand Illusion' - the oldest indy filmhouse in Seattle.
Only reason I know this is because I've got some friends that volunteer there. It's a nice place, full of charm and with friendly staff - and they are always showing something interesting.
If you're in the Puget Sound/Seattle area, it's worth going to for an evening out - best $6 you could spend.

P.S. - Another great song/video by Harvey Danger: Morally Centrailia. Should be up on YouTube still.

P.S.S. - This is a great journal, Selinker, keep up the good work!

You know, when I typed "Guild 45th," I was thinking of the Grand Illusion. I've seen many movies there. (Though not on Christmas.) So I'll modify the column accordingly.

P.S. I hadn't seen the video for "Moral Centralia," but it's good enough that I'm adding it to the column. Wow, two changes from one comment.

P.S.S. Thanks! (No changes for that.)
