I can only assume that the reason 1066 and All That isn't on the list is because of lack of exposure due to Americanity. It's a survey of British history based on what most people remember from school, making it a precursor of Common Knowledge.

I haven't read that, but I did consider Dave Barry Slept Here, which is a modern American version of that concept.

+1 to Dave Barry Slept Here. My family regularly makes reference to things like James Monroe Doctrine and of course, Barry's brilliant insight about October 8th.

But yeah, nothing tops Our Dumb Century.
