Trying to set up Tortoise Git on a Win7 x64 machine is a pain in the ass. Still, it's one of the first steps in what's likely to be a very, very long and trying road. Git has a steepish learning curve, but Oh! is it nice once you get there.

I've since managed to get it working fine. It's a better option than SVN for dealing with binary-heavy content, particularly given that it uses a metafile system compatible with Unity3D; Hell, as of Unity 3.5, once it's released from beta (I'm already in the beta), they're switching to a Git based versioning system anyways for Unity's own internal stuff. Might as well ride the curve early.
