Sounds like that Maori station is trying to stir up some anger over the state of indigenous people everywhere! Or maybe it's to say 'hey, your lives aren't so bad! look at what the Canadians do!'

i think the maori station is just trying to promote awareness, really. plus, they need aboriginal content and usually the stuff that stars native people is super depressing. i wonder why aboriginals aren't more represented in popular culture... or i guess why anyone except a bunch of honky white guys/women aren't more represented in popular culture. HM.
