It's called "Artist's Alley" and yes, for first time sellers and folks trying to get their foot in the door it is an /excellent/ idea. I know a lot of people who do really well. The setting up every day and table squatting is kind of a pain in the butt, but it usually yields pretty good results.
You just can't sell/display adult works. People usually are looking for commissions in the artists alley rather than "things" unless you have items like keychains and stickers. So if you can come up with some quick and dirty badges you'd do well.
Thanks for the imput! Mark and I are trying to decide what to do about MFF this year, if we want to go or wait till next year when I remember in time and actually - ya'know - plan better. :O
Mostly I just have bookmarks, I don't know how to make stickers or magnets and I doubt any of my works would sell on those anyway. So for now I think I might put it off.
I could be biased and say you should go this year because I'll be there (I'm GOH) but realistically, if I were you I would wait until next year. I think the hotel is sold out already (I think? Don't quote me on that), and I am one of those "planners" who likes to plan things months in advance because conventions take a lot out of me, so I'd like to get mentally prepared well in advance and have my table sign ready, trial-pack my gear for travel etc. I'm one of those super-preparers though.
