I was under the impression that falasha was not a particularly nice or appreciated term. Am I completely wrong about that? Is that what they call themselves?

may be you are right! the fact is that we study them as "falasha" because in Russian academic tradition it's thei name. I heard that they call themselves "beta Israel", but I always considered this name to be non-scientific. Anyway, I never heard that "falasha" in't very appreciated by these people. I ment nothing bad by writing it. By the way, the black people in Russian calle "negr" that is't bad because there is no other termin and there was never such discrimination in Russia. The languages are different, you no ))

Well, in Israel itself the Ethiopian Jews don't appreciate the term because it supposedly relates to the sect in Ethiopia who aren't "truly Jewish", and there is huge debate whether they should be allowed to emigrate to Israel.
