What I like about travel by boat and train is a sense of the distance covered that somehow eludes me when flying, despite seeing countries zipping past below. The somewhat ponderous chugging of the ferry followed by the zippy passage across a chunk of Europe with long hours of landscape dulating and undulating (why does "dulate" not exist as a word ( Read more... )

I'm actually the other way around. I struggle to focus on anything 'moving image' narrative. I can just about manage a film - depending upon what it is - but if you ask me to follow a TV show over many weeks (or years) I just can't. The only recent exception was The Killing on BBC 4 but I had other reasons for watching it than just the narrative. I had also huge problems paying attention to the LOTR films despite myself and obvious interest.

Writing/reading? No probs.

The human brain is a weird & wonderful thing.

This reminds me of "The Voyage" by Washington Irving, a description of a transatlantic crossing which brought home to me how different travel used to be. In it Irving says that the long sea voyage between America and Europe means that there is a clear break between home and abroad and allows travellers to prepare themselves mentally for new countries and new experiences.

I will be regularly using "dulating" from now on. It's the perfect word to describe the prairie landscape

As a side note, many parents with ADHD kids use coffee as a "homebrew adderall" to help kids who have difficulty at certain times of the day. We were investigating treatment for our son who is also borderline and many parents have taken this route (symptomatic caffeine application) rather than medication.

Hey, good to hear/read you! I didn't know that about coffee for adhd kids, but it definitely Works for me.
For some reason that now eludes me, I had never associated Winnipeg with prairie, but it makes sense from where you are geographically.
