I recently got to try this stuff called "K pour Karite" on my rough, rather long hair, and my hair had never been softer. Apparently the stuff is liquid shea butter, and it smells rather delicately of ginger. The caveat being... the stuff is expensive over here, though available in drugstore prices in France, its country of origin.
But yeah. Actual emollients (lipids, usually) are best for both hair and skin. The stuff in most commercial shampoos and conditioners are surfactants and/or silicones that do nasty things to your hair. But you have chemist parents, so you already knew that, didn't you?
