WTF

I was up doing homework at 3:30 this morning and my ceiling started leaking buckets and buckets of water. I unplugged and moved everything I could and called the fire department. They had to break into the vacant apartment above me and found that a water heater had burst. The flooding got so bad that the apartment below mine was getting water in ( Read more... )

Oh no!!!! I'm so sorry, that's really horrible...

A) I hope your landlord is putting you up in a hotel (at least for last night?), because in situations like that they sometimes have to.
B) I think you should tell your professor, even if it's not to get an extension (yet). Better to let him/her know enough in advance. When my brother was sick, I told my prof just because I didn't want to seem like a zombie in class (we only had one face to face meeting, of course, on that same day), and she was glad I did and very understanding (they sort of have to be since grad students are far more often grown ups with real life problems).

The landlord's office called this morning and the lady was a complete dick to me because I left so many messages last night. Like she wouldn't have done the same thing if there was a flood coming from her ceiling? Luckily, the maintenance guy who came this morning was very nice and helpful.

Still, they legally have to provide you with liveable circumstances. So if your apartment is in any way insufficient now, you should look into Philly's laws on the matter.

do you have renters' insurance? i hope so! (also, this reminds me i need to get some...)

in my last apartment (which i just moved out of two weeks ago), there was a leak in my bathroom ceiling that was bad, but we never found the cause. it was such a pain in the ass, because at no point did enough water come through the hole that anything was ruined or we the room was unusable, so i would just keep walking into the bathroom in the morning and stepping in a big puddle of water, or hearing a small downpour while i was in the other room and rushing in to see the water streaming down yet again...

i hate wetness, a lot. good luck with all of this.

Unfortunately, I don't have renter's insurance. I replaced $50 worth of towels and my MacBook power adapter ($85!) today, and I think that's all I'll need to do. I'm really thinking about getting insurance now. I mean, what if I hadn't been awake or home at all? It could have been a lot worse.

I can't seem to catch a break, though! It's always something with me.
