I've realized, we've never actually discussed librarian-ness. Are you into public/academic/what? I'm all about archives (possibly special libraries) and legislative stuff. I really don't want to end up working in a law library in a law firm, but a real law library outside of a law firm could be ok. I'm weird in that I like either really, really old stuff or stuff that is being constantly updated (i.e., because of current court decisions or legislation). Do you want to do technical serives or reference or cataloguing or knowledge management of some kind? I'm definitely leaning towards more of a referenc focus, even if I wind up deciding to get another degree on top of my MLS, because, as I've posted here before, I really want to do research/analysis. And I find the stuff I'm doing now (moving books around, etc.) isn't really my thing (obviously, since I feel inclined to lj while at work...)

Or wait...did we discussed it a long time ago? Like back when I was in the application process maybe? If so, I apologize...I've been meeting too many library students lately in my classes (and I dislike most of them, which also says something...) so I can't seem to keep it all straight.

The classes I'm taking next quarter are oddly enough exactly what I hope to do - be a Young Adult Librarian in a public library! I really don't want to be in a big city public library. Seeing homeless people using the bathroom sinks as showers isn't something I ever want to deal with. It would be nice if I could be in a small town (I loved the public library in Oxford). Reference would be fun as well.

But, in all honesty, I don't think I'll ever find a job in a library and I'll have yet another useless degree.

I read an article the other day about how good the economic crisis could potentially be for the library industry (obviously, anything that supplies stuff for "free" is good). And don't give up hope on getting a library job. From what I see and here, you might just need to be prepared to pack up and move across the country. My co-worker just finished her degree (and hence wants a better job than what she's got here, understandably), but she and her husband own a townhouse, so she feels like she's stuck in the area (her husband is self-employed, so while his career/the work he can get is a factor, it's not quite the same as it could be).
There are also lot of other jobs (that are not technically library jobs) that still utilize information professionals. :)
