For any mundane, non-critical one-on-one interactions with the scientist here, whether it be poking him for whatever reason, maintaining continuity, throwing him an item, or in general doing something that isn't momentous enough to require a whole post or log for it.

[Eggman loudly clears his throat into the journal's voice receiver.] A-he-he-he-hem! Professor Hastings? I may need your help regarding the use of the journal system.

[Eggman hates asking for help, but this fellow seems fairly gullible helpful and it saves any more frustration with the journal.]

[As if almost on automatic, Robert filters this reply immediately. Not only will it prevent anybody from listening in, but it will mask the fact he has correspondence with a known villain.

... Not that Robert is particularly ashamed of it, but the last thing he wants to do is present himself as dangerous.]

Ah... c-certainly, Doctor Robotnik. What sort of assistance d-do you require...?

Filters, Professor! I've been noticing unreadable, or otherwise suspicious areas of people's journal entries here and there. In my infinite wisdom I've surmised that these are probably due to the filters I read about in the Guide you so kindly gave me. Still, it didn't really give instructions on how to construct or deconstruct a filter, and the one page I thought might have a lead is mysteriously inaccessible to me now.

[That almost definitely says it's villain-filtered. And Robert knows that happens to be 100%, even though he's never used it.

Still... this is entirely possible for him.]

I would be... g-glad to teach you to manipulate filters. Though, er, bear in mind I have never... d-deconstructed filters... [Okay, he did it once out of anger...]

... It seems, er, somewhat inethical to break into other peoples' filters, though...

I don't care about what's ethical or inethical, Hastings! What I care about is finding out what certain people are saying behind my back. And hiding what I have to say from those people!

[... What, really?]

You r-realize that others will probably... d-do the same to you, then...

B-but, if you insist, I... I can teach you. The process is... very flexible, for... f-for constructing a filter.

And they won't do the same to me if I don't know how to hack filters? Ha! In any case, I'm too smart to let someone hack my filters. Go ahead and tell me how it works.

T-To create a filter, one must write whom one wants to filter it to or from, draw a box around the text, image or voice file one wishes to filter, and then construct some m-method of actually filtering the image... it can be something s-such as a passcode or puzzle, or something more elaborate like m-mathematical notation...

The more c-complex the pattern, the harder it is to... c-circumvent the filter.

... In order to hack a filter, one m-must... first attempt to locate the filter by drawing a box around the a-area one suspects is filtered, and then input "hack"... if it is s-successful, the filter will be revealed, and then o-one goes about attempting to solve whatever f-filter was protecting the contents.

... The, er, time n-necessary seems to vary depending on the strength of the filter... and certain filters are i-impossible to decode.

Aha! Yes, yes! That's what I needed to know! I'm sure I can successfully hack any filter I need to, but I was stuck on how to reveal the nature of the filters in the first place! The same goes for creating one. Ha ha! Splendid, Professor. I'll have to try it some time!

[This is so profoundly awkward. Robert hopes that if he ever has to filter anything from the doctor again, his filters hold strong.]

You are... w-welcome, Doctor Robotnik.

Filters are... quite useful. Though p-please note that the Malnosso can still a-access these channels at will, even if filtered... a-anything truly private should be kept... o-off the journals.

[Robert shouldn't hide things from Eggman. Sounds awfully unethical.]

Of course, of course. I wouldn't write anything in these journals I didn't want those idiots to hear.

I suppose that will be all for now. I'll have the parts I need to test out a power source I have in mind soon, though. Perhaps I'll invite you to my workshop to see it tested.

[He's one to talk.]

I would be... most interested in seeing it, actually.

[... Robert's not lying. He IS curious. It's been so long since he's seen a proper roboticist at work.]

Ba ha ha! Of course you would! If it works, it will be magnificent!

Farewell for now, Professor.

Oh! And if you see Knuckles, tell him the truce is most definitely off. I don't appreciate allies working against me behind my back.

[Whelp. There goes that hopeful, tentative idea for peace.]

... I understand.

Take care, Doctor Robotnik.

[Knuckles will eventually be informed. But he actually finds himself not wanting them to fight.]
