[Everything was utterly insane. It was more insanity than Robert could have ever theorized in all of the twenty-four years of his existence.
The first thing he had done after getting into his new apartment was read the "journal", one of the communications devices that were distributed by the Malnosso, the scientists - scientists that did not adhere

...You're new here, aren't you?

[His tone softens somewhat - not much, mostly it just goes back to being rather cold - as he continues.] I apologize. I just... Is this always what these Malnosso do? [The next part is more to himself than her.] How could a self-respecting scientist even do this sort of thing?

They have plenty of self-respect -- it's respecting anyone else they have a problem with. [A sigh.] It's not exactly the same, but things like this happen a lot. There's usually a week -- or around a week -- of this and then it just...stops.

Abominable. This... This is psychological torture at the highest extreme. And I thought having wing grafts forcibly affixed to my person was enough of a violation of my bodily rights. [His tone is wry.]
Perhaps this is done to see the resilience of the subjects that they have collected. Or perhaps they are measuring our endorphines, or our response times, or something. To be honest, even as a trained researcher I haven't the foggiest notion of what they could possibly be gaining from this, other than satisfaction at seeing whatever technique they are using at work. And surely it wouldn't be large-scale brain transplants... It happened far too haphazardly for that.

At any rate, I am concerned for their well-being. And because of the insanity that has been occurring as of late, I cannot be sure if they are currently out of harm's way.

Are you a new feather?

Clearly you can speak to me, and you don't sound particularly different, so I suppose the Malnosso haven't affected either of us... yet.
[He's suddenly sheepish. He probably looked like something of an idiot yelling after them.] Ah... well. It was a little unprofessional of me to do this, but... I... I was concerned. [That's an understatement, actually. The idea of losing a possible friend here, to something as sudden and unexpected as this, frightens Robert. Even if people are somehow revived from death in Luceti.]

I suppose you have a firsthand experience now to the Malnosso and one of their experiments. [ Just a sigh. It's been a rather crazy week. ]

And yes, I suppose that I do now. [There's some incredulosity in Robert's voice.] I never imagined that they had such complete and utter control over us, to be able to modify our bodies at will. And from internal knowledge of us, even. [Robert suppresses a slight shudder. How much do the Malnosso know about them? About him?]

[Robert's tone shifts to something more introspective.] It is strange. Neither you nor I have been affected... But there appears to be no constant as to who becomes affected and who does not.

[She pauses for a moment, then remembers that voice in this situation is not going to be helpful at all. Soft cough.] ...Sorry. I probably should have mentioned; this is Litchi.

But Robert is relieved to know that all of his friends are safe. And if Robert was a little more shallow, Litchi happens to be rather handsome, currently.]
I'm glad to see that you're alright, if not quite... yourself at the moment.

Realizing that this entire thing is bound to be particularly overwhelming so soon after he arrived, her tone softens.] Are you doing okay? I know the first experiment can be particularly difficult.

To be honest... I'm rather overwhelmed. This is so unreal, and seemingly impossible. I know that Luceti is a different universe, but are the physics here really so... non-existent? [He knows it isn't the right word. But it's hard to find a better one.] Everything feels... Well, it feels as if the entire system of logic just collapsed in on itself. And these experiments are hardly helping, though I suppose they serve as some objective proof of the matter... how I wish I had my nanocomputer with me, that I might do some research. [His voice seems... strained. Anxiety and the after-effects of adrenaline spiking has worn on him significantly.]
