Chapter 29

“I have the most amazing offer for you! You see one of my colleagues in America called me today and told me that he needed more help with his research project. I recommended you to him since you’re one of my prized students and he wants to you go down to help him. Isn’t that wonderful?...You’re welcome! I’m really going to miss my best student…I mean being gone for two years? You’re still in Japan of course but *sigh* it isn’t going to be the same in class without you…”

Shako talked with Mano-sensei for a while, discussing the details of her trip, before hanging up the phone. How on Earth was she going to tell Daiki?

“Who was it?” he walked towards her.

“Mano-sensei…”

“What’s wrong Shako? You don’t look so well…” Shako was pale and had a lost look in her eye.

“Daiki…what should I do? Mano-sensei called to offer me a job in assisting one of her colleagues…” She started slowly.

“So? What’s wrong with that? That’s good isn’t it?” he raised an eyebrow.

“No it’s not… Her colleague works in America…The project will take two years…They already have living quarters ready so if I went I wouldn’t have to worry about housing but…I don’t know…” she looked up to Daiki, “This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance… But I can’t stand not seeing everyone for two years…”

Daiki faced showed that he was thinking. Suddenly his face changed into a smile. “You’re going right? Two years is nothing Shako! It’s great that you were recommended! America huh… It’s not THAT far~” he tried to cheer her up. What was wrong with Daiki? Did he want to get rid of her that badly?

“I guess so… but Dai-chan…we won’t be able to see each other for a while…Are you sure you’re fine with that?”

“Of course I am! Shako, you can’t let this chance go! Sure we won’t be able to see each other every day but we still have the phone right? Plus in this time and era we have something called the internet!”

“Sure…”

“When do you have to answer by?”

“…three days from now…”

“Ja…We should start getting your things together nee?”

“Yea…” Shako felt her heart shatter and a lump in her throat. Daiki was way too energetic about this… Did he not love her anymore? Any normal person wouldn’t want their loved one to leave…especially for two YEARS. It hurt to think about it. Of course Shako wanted to take the opportunity but she didn’t want to leave Daiki or her life in Tokyo. America was a far from Japan… Mano-sensei already reassured her that it wouldn’t be so hard to fit in especially because her colleague and his team spoke Japanese. What’s holding her back? Well..her family, her friends, her most important person…Shako had a feeling that everyone else would probably tell her to take the opportunity. There really was no point in talking it over with them.

When Shako went to sleep that night, she couldn’t help but feel depressed. The whole idea of leaving Japan didn’t feel right to her. What was more important was know that Daiki was pushing her to go. She sat up in bed and tears started to pour out from her eyes. Shako thought Daiki was already fast asleep and she started to talk to herself.

“Why Dai-chan?... Are you trying to get rid of me?....why don’t you care?” she sobbed. Shako thought Daiki was dead in his sleep and wasn’t quiet. Daiki actually wasn’t sleeping. He was lying in bed with his eyes closed, steadily breathing, trying to fool Shako into believe he was actually asleep. Apparently it worked. Shako continued to cry until she felt a pair of arms snake around her waist from behind. She almost had a heart-attack but then realized it was Daiki when spoke softly.

“What are you talking about…Of course I care…How could I not….Shako…honestly. If I told you I didn’t want you to leave what would you have done?” His arms were around her and he was speaking quietly into her ear.

“I don’t know…” She was unsure.

“You wouldn’t have decided to go that’s what you would have done. What kind of boyfriend would I be if I held you back? That’s why I didn’t say anything. I don’t want you to feel like I’m holding you back. Which I why I’m not going to say that I don’t want you to go.”

“Arigatou Daiki…I wish I could just take you with me…demo muri…that’s impossible…”

“I’ll just hide in your suitcase” he stuck out his tongue jokingly. Shako sighed. By then she stopped sobbing but there were still tears on her face. Daiki smile fell and his lips were pressed together. “Nee Shako… there’s no need to cry… It’s not like I’m going anywhere…I’ll be waiting for you to come back and calling you everyday…okay maybe not everyday…the phone bills would be huge if I did that… I’ll e-mail you instead!” Shako shifted her body so she was facing Daiki and was on her knees. Daiki took her face in his hands and used his thumbs to wipe away her tears. “Daijoubu”

“Un!” she smiled to him. Even though this was probably one of the hardest things Shako’s had to do in her life (apart from quadratic functions and trigonometry) she tried her best to be positive. “We should go to sleep now…It’s already 2AM…” she looked distractedly at the clock not noticing that Daiki’s face was a few centimeters in front of her. He leaned in to kiss her on the lips before pulling her into his arms and wrapping the blankets around them both. Shako buried her face into Daiki’s chest trying to find a comfortable position to sleep in.

“Oyasumi Dai-chan. Aishiteru*”

“I love you too. Oyasumi”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A month filled with hectic packing passed and Shako and Daiki were at the airport. She already sent some of her things with Mano-sensei who left a few days prior to Shako’s departure. Mano-sensei was accompanying Shako to the facility to introduce her to her colleague and was staying around for a few weeks in order to help Shako adjust to life in America.
“Ja…” Shako was rocking on the heels of her feet; “they’re calling for my flight…” she looked at Daiki anxiously.
“Stop worrying Shako! You’ll be fine! Mano-sensei’s there for you and I’m only a phone call away!”
Shako looked like she was pondering about something. She smiled and threw arms around Daiki who hugged her back. “I’m really going to miss you Dai-chan…”
“I know…I’ll miss you too. Be safe okay?”
“Un!” She gave him a farewell kiss and started walking towards the terminal.
“Don’t you dare go and cheat on me with any American guys!” Daiki yelled.
“I won’t~” she laughed and walked towards the doors. “Bye bye Dai-chan,” Shako whispered to herself as one tear slid down her cheek.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

After seeing Shako off, Daiki watched the planes take off for an hour before leaving for home. It was going to be really quiet without Shako…well other than Nami-chan who was still as energetic as ever.

“Tadaima…” Daiki said when he walked into the house. No one answered and his voice just bounced off of the walls. “Oh right…” Nami-chan ran up to Daiki and started to crowd around his feet. “It’ll just be you and me from now on Nami-chan…” Even though he was happy that Shako took the offer, he felt a little lonely. The smile on his face disappeared once Shako left and was replaced with a simple line. Daiki didn’t feel anything. He didn’t know what to feel.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Daiki went back and forth from work and school every day. He woke up early every morning and made himself a simple breakfast. Lunch was normally bought and dinner was normally instant ramen. Shako wasn’t there to cook meals anymore and so he had to fend for himself. Yabu-kun, Hikaru and Inoo took him out sometimes to play pool or to go for a few drinks but Daiki never really enjoyed himself. He always lost at pool and didn’t drink.
Even though he was depressed most of the time, his mood would perk every Friday. The reason? Friday was the day Shako would call from America. Since there was a 14 hour difference between Japan and America, Shako would always call at 10 pm in America so it would be 12pm in Japan. She didn’t want to burden Daiki with having to talk to her early in the morning. They would spend a few minutes on the phone and then they would move to their computers to continue their conversations. Long distance calls are charged according to the amount of time spent talking. As for the internet, they could use however long they liked.
“Moshi moshi? Dai-chan?”
“Hi Shako. How was work today?”
“It was fine… I worked with A LOT of penguins today. It was fun! How are you Dai-chan? Are you eating okay? I hope you’re at least TRYING to cook. I don’t want you to be buying take out every day!” she scolded him. Wow…could Shako read Daiki’s mind?
“I’m fine… I’ve been trying…I can’t make anything as good as you can though… I’m surprised I haven’t burnt down the house yet…” he said sullenly.
“Aww Dai-chan…do you miss me THAT much?” she said in a playful tone.
“O-of course I don’t miss you!” He was trying to hide his feelings.
“I know you’re lying, Dai-chan. If it makes you feel any better I miss you too. It sucks that I can’t see you…” her voice was breaking and her eyes started watering.
“Maybe it’s time that we switch nee? You don’t sound like you can talk much more…”
“Un…Let’s switch.”
Daiki waited until he heard a click over the phone which signaled that Shako hung up. He sighed and put the phone back onto its charger. He moved over to the computer and started typing. “Are you okay?”
“Yeah…just a little teary… I can’t wait until I’m finished here…I mean…it’s fun and all…but it’d be more fun if I could see you…” even though they were on the computer, he could tell that she wasn’t ‘a little teary’. Shako was probably crying her eyes out.
“You have to enjoy yourself Shako! Don’t worry about me nee? I know you miss home and stuff but with a positive attitude, time passes that much quicker! ^_^” he wasn’t smiling. In fact, small tears were also starting to form in his eyes. Okay, so people say men aren’t supposed to cry but how many of those guys are separated from their lovers?
“I know… How long has it been? Since I left that is…”
“…36 days…”
“Only 36? GAH I can’t wait until the two years are over…”
“neither can I…”
“I have to go now…big day tomorrow. I have to go butcher fish and then haul in a huge fish for examining. It’s nice that we’re helping the poor little dude but…do they have to be so slimy? I got whacked in the face earlier today!”
“LOL!” For the first time all that week Daiki burst out laughing.
“It isn’t THAT funny…It hurt you know!”
“I know XD”
“Okay I really gotta go now…”
“Ja…oyasumi <3 I love you *kisses*”
“*blushing emoticon* I love you too <3”
Takahashi Shako appears to be offline
Daiki signed out and sighed. He closed the window and looked at the picture on his desktop. It was the picture they took at Tokyo Disneyland. Daiki had to practically force Shako to let him put the picture of him kissing her on the desktop.
~Flashback~
“Okay, I’ve packed up all my bathroom stuff…Dai-chan what are you doing?” he was bent over his laptop.
“Hmm? Oh I’m just changing my desktop…” he said musically.
“To what?... DAI-CHAN! No! That’s so embarrassing!!” she tried to change it.
“Too bad~ I like it.” He gave Shako a sly smile before capturing her lips in a kiss. All of Shako’s protests died.
Shako pouted. “Mou…fine… but you’re explaining if anyone asks.”
“That’s fine~”
~End of Flashback~
“I shouldn’t have put this up….” Daiki sighed to himself. It made him depressed to see the picture yet he never took it down.
He went outside to stare into the sky. There was a faint twinkle. In Tokyo, the lights make the sky too bright and so it’s really hard to see stars. He remembered back to his conversation with Shako and how she told him that she still loved him. To be honest, Daiki wasn’t sure how a long-distance relationship would work. This only made him realize something. Maybe some people can’t handle a long-distance relationship but all being under the sky makes long distances seem short. Some couples tend to move further apart but this was only going to make his relationship with Shako even stronger.
A/N- La la la~ I almost cried when writing this chapter! I apologize with all the mushy gushyness if it’s not your thing~ Shako’s in America nee… it reminds me. I wanna dedicate this chapter to two ppl XD The first being my senpai who’s leaving me soon T^T (written August 24th) and she’s doing the opposite…and aangko for pushing me to go through with this idea…even though my life is on the line (threat of being shot by all my readers) I hope you’ll protect me XD you promised! Minna…don’t worry nee? Everything will be fine by the next chapter XD I can’t stand sad stuff….it pains me to make Shako and Daiki feel this way… Daiki can’t live without shako nee? It may seem like Shako is Daiki’s …maid? But he really loves her…it just so happens that Daiki fails at cooking…
Two more chapters left!
*Aishiteru- most powerful way of saying “I love you”
