Ok I admit I'm not making a great deal of progress on project dreadnought, but I have been unwell and I also got distracted by a rather fab Christmas present from Mr Wayne.
The model is from the GW Inquisitor scale series, so it stands about 4 inches tall and consequently has a lot of detail. The large surface areas were ideal for testing my new airbrush out and get used to mixing paints suitable for spraying. I undercoated the figure with black and then airbrushed on boltgun metal, then a mid highlight of chainmail (again with the airbrush) and then finally used the airbrush to do some shading with devlan mud. The airbrush shading didn't work so well and I did the rest with using regular brush to apply a blue wash, as a black wash would've flattened the metal out too much.
For the previous two coats, the airbrush allowed me to get a huge amount done in a very short time, as the paint dries so quickly. Got the basecoat on and then quickly applied the first highlight.
I did some final edge highlighting using a detail brush and mithril silver paint. The size of the miniature made it much easier to pick out the areas where the highlighting could be sensibly applied, but also the reflective nature of the metallic paint helped. Indeed, I could probably have left a lot of highlighting out, because the metallic paint lights up quite nicely anyway but I think defining that top layer adds extra depth to the model.
For the gold I used Ron's (FromTheWarp) technique of basing with a nice warm brown (snakebite leather) and then applying the gold. I was impressed with how vibrant the colour was, much more so than the darker gold I use for my Deathwing/Dark Angels where I base with Tin Bitz. In this case I think the darker gold wouldn't have contrasted as well with the grey metal armour. AI highlighted the gold using a lighter gold colour (thankyou Reaper Miniature's master series) and then washed with Gryphonne Sepia.
The overall colour scheme is inspired by Ron FromTheWarp's recent guide on painting a Grey Knight and as this figure is supposed to be from the Inquisition (the Ordo Malleus) I decided that the Grey Knight scheme was appropriate, as they are supposed to be the fighting arm of the Inquisition. I shall have to display him away from my Deathwing, or they'll gang up and shoot him.
I've tried to do a lava/fire effect on the sword and it hasn't worked as well as I would've liked. I will probably repaint that or save it as a reminder to stuff I did wrong. I've also spotted that I've not painted in the gun barrell properly as well, which is a slight oversight on my part.
I think my macro photography is improving slightly as well.
Oh yes and one final tip. The natural home for a compressor with a 24litre reserve is NOT right next to your P.C.
Right, I'll get back to project dreadnought now I promise.
