As promised, a few pictures of the Genestealer I've been working on, although at this stage its just testing out an approach for getting the skin right.
Well, I think it's pretty neat; in particular I'm struck by (i) the pretty fluid shading from what looks like a dark blue (with a hint of purple) up to light pinky-purple, it seems to me to work far better than a dark-but-more-purpley purple would have; and (ii) in particular, the rear part of the cranium around and behind the veins - that looks great on the second two photos.
I sort of see what you're saying about the finger joints - possibly the knuckles slightly more than the fingers themselves - but is that even visible on the model at actual scale? I'd have though it was just a standard low-light.
More of the same really. I'll build up a highlight on the blue, working towards a very sharp highlight at the edges of the carapace, then wash it all down so the transitions blurr and I get a good depth of shadow. To get the dark look, I'll probably have to work in a black wash nearer the recesses.
