Stummfilmfestival in San Francisco

Well, the Silent Film Festival this year was a rather understated celebration.  We only saw three presentations when we bought tickets for four.  The fourth movie was skipped because of feeling generally ill and tired, and having a German final on Monday.  But, what I did go to I thoroughly enjoyed.

I've heard of Nazimova from time to time, and boy would I like to see one of her films. My current Russian teacher actually studied film, so I should be able to ask her about the earlier Russian cinema (she actually wrote her dissertation on Hitchcock and gender in his films), but as far as I know the only stuff of note back then was propaganda. And propaganda films have always bored me.

On that note, didn't you say you just got NetFlix? Look for a modern Russian movie called Brother 2. It's really good. If you like those kind of funny, hip gangster movies.

Oh yeah, and did I tell you? I got the Saga of Gosta Berling from Blockbuster Online. Garbo's first "serious" movie, supposedly it's great.

I hope one day I'll be able to go to some sort of silent movie event or such. How I envy you! :)
