i'm moving to california. that is, as long as nothing happens in the next week to change my plans. i've got one offer coming to me, and i'm waiting to see if another one comes through. i plan to take 1-2 weeks to drive from denver to san francisco (at the end of july) - just as a rest between jobs and as an opportunity to see some national parks. Well, look me up when you get here! What part of SF are you moving to?

Neat!

i don't want to get too broke. the cost of living changes are going to kill me as it is. so i'm thinking palo alto - mountain view area, wherever i can find cheap-ish but nice accomodations. i don't think i can afford the city or the commute.

Currently we live in San Mateo. PA and MV are pretty expensive, well I guess everything is. Sunnyvale and Santa Clara are cheaper, and okay to live in. Also, a little further north, San Carlos, and Belmont shouldn't be terrible. Where is the job?

Whatever you do, try and say West(the ocean side of 101), east is either not very safe living (East Palo Alto) or landfill, which means 'not stable' if there is an earthquake.

thanks for the info. these are things i didn't know. the job is in PA, hence the desire to live there - i want to avoid long commute, possibly even being able to bike to work. so i'll check out the areas you recommended.

I can vouch for Mesa Verde and Arches, though Arches really was what blew my mind. MV has some really neat ruins and archaelogical stuff, but Arches is (IMO) more visually stunning.

I'd also suggest Canyonlands, but it's so freakin' huge...

good to know. i'll keep in mind that i only want enough time to see mesa verde but i want to plan for extra time at arches. and i'll keep canyonlands in mind if i end up with more time than i think.
