Someone on a Burning Man mailing list posted a link to a youtube video called Pendulum Waves. The moment I saw it I just had to build it, but bigger and with blinky lights. I spent a few days doing experiments making pendulum bobs out of free weights and quickly realized that they needed to be aerodynamic and dense. Last week I made a mold and picked up 600lbs of lead to make the bobs out of. I cut up an old propane tank with my oxy rig (thanks
rmd) and melt the lead over a turkey fryer with a boost from an ice melter.
Over the next couple of weeks I need to cast a total of 16 bobs and get them wired. I also need to make the structure that holds them. The pendulums are going to range in length from 12 to 18' and hang from a 20' tall structure that is 32' long.
The plan is for
radioactiverich to program the lights to be synchronized with the movement of the pendulums. Plan is to have it ready for firefly and for him and Our friend chuck to bring it out to Burning Man in August.
There is quite a bit to be done between now and Firefly (4th of July).
I will be holding a few work parties between now and then.
If anyone wants to come participate and make some crazy art then please ping me when you have free time.
rough construction schedule.....
This evening, friday evening, and saturday morning I will be casting lead.
Sunday I hope to finish the castings.
Next week at some point I want to wire up all the lights.
The following weekend We will measure and cut the pendulum cables and hopefully complete construction of the structure.
Then comes lots of adjustment and testing.......
Oh here is the youtube video that started all of this madness:
