for whatever reason, in spite of the bay area's self-proclaimed liberalism (which is closer to fascism, imho, but that's another conversation), it's really an UNfriendly and UNsupportive area. i'm not quite sure why, but i really don't like it. there's something very small minded and vindictive about the bay area. and since it's where i was raised, i feel the need to personally apologize for the petty jerks who are wishing everyone in socal ill. the fires down there are scary, and just because they happen all the time doesn't mean anyone should be used to them. (that's like saying that people in california should be used to earthquakes; you NEVER get used to them.)
hope all is well w/ everyone you know.
also, i think it's both the wee brains and heartless bodies.
ew. the more i think about it, the more bothered i am that people in norcal can be so cruel. i mean, i know it's not unique to the san francisco bay area, but i'd like to be able to have some more pride in where i'm from. le sigh!
As someone from Los Angeles--and who is still in the depths of her heart a Los Angelian, my feelings are complicated. On the one hand, I am angry such a beautiful upper desert has been raped by so much suburban sprawl. There are geologically unsound areas, such as Malibu, that were never meant to sport houses. But geologically unsound areas for housing also exist in Northern California, and people don't learn their lessons here, either. I also become angry when people fail to see the utter beauty of the still-unspoiled desert regions. A college friend from Colorado used to put down the lack of mountainous green, which greatly offended me. What I used to dislike about Los Angeles, however, was what I called The Hollywood Mentality, which cast its ugly pallor over the majority of Los Angelians quietly going about their lives. Especially people like me, who belonged to an environmental group in my native Torrance to save the last remaining marsh from a greedy developer, whom I still hate
