now that was an earthquake.

today is the 15th anniversary of the northridge earthquake. i remember it as VERY scary, much scarier than the 1971 sylmar quake. northridge was a completely different kind of earthquake than the sylmar quake. the sylmar quake was more roll-y while the northridge quake was SO LOUD and jerk-y, but then again i was a kid during the 1971 quake. Wait, the sylmar quake was in 1971? Was it that late? I guess it must have been, but I remember it as if I was much younger. By comparison, I wasn't here for the northridge quake.

We lived in sherman oaks when the sylmar quake hit, and I remember my Dad trying to walk up the back bedroom hallway to get to my baby brother... he literally had to hold on to the wall to get there. People say corny things during emergencies... I remember my dad saying "I'm coming, son."

In that chaotic emergency corny voice... I swear he never ever called my brother 'son' any other time. All of our kitchen cabinets opened up and everything flew out of them and our aquariums were ruined and all the fish sloshed out with the water when either the water was tossed out or the glass broke... we used to have a whole bunch of aquariums then (my mother's hobby) and alas, our fish were all lost during that quake.

Where were you?

oh dear! your dad too?! i guess it's not surprising that parents would act out of raw emotion in a crazy emergency like an earthquake. :D ( ... )

This is great. THANKS for sharing so much. I can't believe how close we were then. Our house was Kester and Valley Vista -- and I live even closer to where you lived then now... we live near Addison and Van Nuys Blvd... north of Riverside, right?

Speaking of Pier One, do you recall when there was a free-standing Pottery Barn on Van Nuys Blvd just North of Ventura Blvd? The whole building is gone now - There's a strip mall with Gyu Kaku (that used to be a pizza place) there now... I think?

Or do you remember when that Kinkos was a record store?

what a small world! i just drove across valley vista the other night and realized i hadn't responded to this post!

oh wow, you're pretty much in my old neighborhood. i was always a flatlander, as a kid and up until ten years ago. :D

and yes!!! i've often wondered what that store was at van nuys and ventura blvd. it was a pottery barn?!?! i still have a salt/pepper shaker that i bought there. i have very fond memories of that store!!!! you must remember the bee hive beauty supply that used to be on the southwest corner of venture at van nuys blvd. how long has it been gone? not as long as the pier one. that is such a distant memory.

i can't picture the kinkos? my older friends worked for record stores while i was in school. records ltd up on victory, west of van nuys blvd and then two of them started moby disc records on ventura next to the fat burger (that used to be casa burger!)

my boyfriend felt the (marina del rey) earthquake the other night and freaked a little. it was the first one-big-jolt kind he[s felt so far. :D

I'm so glad you weren't injured during that earthquake. I remember being horribly concerned about friends who were in the area. Thankfully, they were fine, too. Just a big mess to clean up.

I'm glad your neighbors pulled together. In San Francisco, we had no electricity and hot water, for several days, after the 1989 quake. Unfortunately, there were people taking advantage of the darkness, so nobody dared to go out when the sun set. On top of that, storekeepers raised the price of water and food because they wanted to take advantage of everyone's need. The neighbors in my building, though, all pulled together. We fed each other so that nobody would go hungry, in case they couldn't eat their food spoiled or ran out.

As a californian, earthquakes terrify me, no matter what size. When the ground starts to move, I immediately think, "Is this The Biggie?"

not injured at all thankfully. when the dust settled i saw this huge chip in the door of my microwave. the only way it could have happened was from something flying across the kitchen. like they say, don't run around during a quake cause you could get knocked out by something ( ... )
