“Headache again?”

Clouded eyes find his gaze as her hands hurriedly drop to her desk.

“Will. You startled me.”

“Sorry.”

He keeps his voice low, flicking off the light as he enters her office. She forces a smile for his benefit, but it quickly dissolves in a wince.

“They’re getting worse,” he murmurs, hands gently kneading her shoulders, fingers digging softly into tense muscles, working out the knots. Eyes slipping shut, she leans back, head falling against his chest. “You can’t keep doing this, Magnus. This is more than just stress.”

“I’m fine, Will.” Her words are sharp, too loud in her own ears. She pulls away from him, determinedly picking up her pen.

“Helen.”

The heaviness of his voice, combined with the still-rare use of her first name, prompts her to meet his eye again. “I’ll be okay. I’m sure it’s nothing.” Her quiet reassurances are delivered with conviction, but they do little to ease his mind. He’s worried about her.

“C’mon. Let’s go to bed.”

“I still have,”

He cuts her protest short, “Bed.”

Giving in, she pushes her chair back, starts to stand, and he catches her as a dizzy spell destroys her balance.

“You okay?” he asks quietly, rubbing her back.

“It’s a migraine, Will,” she mutters, clinging to him tightly, still not trusting herself to stand on her own.

“I’m sorry. It’s just nothing with you is ever simple.”

She chuckles, the action only aggravating her headache. “I promise you it’s nothing more sinister than that,” she says softly, blindly seeking out his hand. He indulgently slides his hand from her back, lacing their fingers, waiting until she pulls out of his embrace.

“Walk me to my room?”

“Try and stop me,” he whispers.

It’s a familiar routine; his acknowledgement that she is still in control, that this is still her decision. They both know he would follow her anyway, but he loves that she asks.

She squeezes his hand when they reach her door. “Are you staying,” she asks softly, the first traces of vulnerability lacing her words, the request pleading.

Tugging her to him, he drops a light kiss in her hair. “If that’s what you want, you’ve got it.”

She half-nods against him before leading him to her bed.

“You aren’t sleeping in that.”

She regards him blankly, then looks down at her knee-length skirt and clingy top. She’s still frowning when he presses a worn sweatshirt into her hands. Peeling off her clothes, she pulls the shirt over her head, the material dwarfing her small frame.

“You’re beautiful.”

“Lay with me.”

After helping her settle, he slips under the covers next to her. Wordlessly, she rests her head on his shoulder, and his arm curls around her protectively.

“What if they aren’t just migraines?”

“Will,” she sighs.

“Magnus, I don’t know how many more close calls I can handle.”

“Aren’t you supposed to be taking care of me, at the moment?” she asks, toying with his fingers where they rest on her stomach. “Because it feels like I’m still taking care of you,” she finishes, whispering.

“Yeah,” he murmurs apologetically, tightening his arm around her.

“Try not to worry so much, Will.”

She drifts off moments later, and he releases a relieved sigh. He will never stop worrying about her.
