“And the temperature will decrease during the weekend, so everyone remember to layer up! I hope this song can bring warmth to you and your family, friends and loved ones in this cold season…”

The sound of the car radio started drowning out as the falling rain became heavier, he reached over and felt for the dial, turning it to raise the volume, but was faced with static jitters and incomprehensible words. His hands dropped from the steering wheel as he leaned back in his seat, staring blindly at the row of vehicles before him.

It was dark outside, through his tears he could make out the bright red of the backlights in front of him, but they were a blur, as much as his thoughts were. He couldn’t remember how he got here, or rather, he didn’t want to remember.

He squeezed their interlocked hands tightly once more before letting go, slowly gazing up to the younger boy with eyes that begged for forgiveness behind a shield.

“Chanyeol, let’s stop now.”

Baekhyun could see the younger’s lips pursing together. The lips that were almost always stretched into the biggest grin, the lips that were sweet and soft against his own, the lips that were now lost with words.

For Chanyeol, this was the most he could do. Leaving him would hurt a lot less than what was to come, the best thing would be for Chanyeol to forget him, to forget he ever existed and move on with his life, to completely erase Baekhyun to the point of no recognition.

His heart strained as he looked before him, his love showing a completely different face, he wasn’t being the bright and happy Chanyeol that he came to love and cherish, and knowing how confused he must have felt, it took all the power and might to not pull him into a tight embrace, to fight the temptations to be selfish and say it was all a joke, but he couldn’t do that. No, he would lock everything in and hide behind the mask of a person that wasn’t himself. For the sake of Chanyeol.

The sudden blast of car horns jolted Baekhyun back into reality as he pushed the hand brake down and applied force on the pedal. He wasn’t too sure where he was heading, somewhere where thoughts couldn’t consume him, but almost everything was a trap. Wherever he thought to go to, there was a memory with Chanyeol that lingered, if he disappeared and left for an unknown place, his last memories would also have been with Chanyeol and there was no way to escape his own mind.

He pulled up at the side of the road and searched for his phone in his pocket. Even this was going to haunt him. The wallpaper was a photo of him and Chanyeol, his passcode was 1127, Chanyeol’s birthday, he couldn’t escape any of it. Everything was based around him and Baekhyun felt as if he was suffocating in his memories.

“This wasn’t meant to happen…” He murmured to himself as he stroked Chanyeol’s face behind the glass.

He spent the night in his car, the sky was too dark and he was too weak to carry himself to another place. The smell of Chanyeol lingered in the air from the pillows and seatbelt wraps that he insisted on putting into Baekhyun’s car. Yeah, there was no escaping him. He could only hope that Chanyeol wouldn’t feel the same.

“Baekhyun! Come on, you can’t keep doing this!”

Kyungsoo had come to visit and after knocking several times with no response, he took it upon himself to break in (or in other words guess the door code which only took two attempts because he tried 2711 before 1127).

He had called earlier and after listening to a series of incoherent mumbles and just about making out Chanyeol’s name a few dozen times he thought he’d do a check up and see what exactly was wrong.

Kyungsoo knew about Baekhyun’s…condition. They grew up together, along with Chanyeol, but Chanyeol was just a little too oblivious to notice anything and then childhood friends turned into childhood lovers, so when Kyungsoo spoke up Baekhyun made him promise to keep it a secret from Chanyeol and the rest is unknown.

He opened the bedroom door in a swift movement and found Baekhyun wrapped in his duvet, sentimentally flicking through a photo album that he compiled over the years.
Pitiful. That was the only way to describe the scene.

Baekhyun didn’t move an inch as Kyungsoo propped on the edge of the desk facing him, he just stared at the photos which were taken on their 100 days, solemnly reminiscing the event that Chanyeol had so carefully planned out, with every detail written in a notepad, which was very cleverly left on the bed for Baekhyun’s eyes to see as he left to blow up balloons. Nevertheless, Baekhyun still acted surprised when it happened, because that’s what the plan said ‘Baekhyun enters. He is surprised. I hug him.’ And that’s how it happened, he walked in, he feigned surprised and Chanyeol hugged him from the back. A faint smile drew on his lips as he recalled the husky “Happy 100 days,” that was whispered into his ear.

Kyungsoo broke the silence by clearing his throat before questioning what happened. Baekhyun looked up and sighed before directing his gaze back down at the page and tracing Chanyeol’s lips with the tip of his finger.

“I did it. I left him.”

Silence fell upon them again as Kyungsoo tried to conjure up the words to say, he felt like the best thing to do would be to not push him for further details until he was ready to tell him himself, and so he slowly made his way out of the bedroom, leaving Baekhyun to flick through the rest of the pages in the photo album as Kyungsoo brew up something in the kitchen.

Baekhyun made it out on his own without the need for a call, the smell was enough to bring him over and the constant growling of his stomach told him that what he really needed right now was food. How else would he have the energy to keep himself away if he didn’t eat? That’s what he told himself. Eat, because it’ll keep him away from Chanyeol. Eat, for the sake of Chanyeol.

It wasn’t long until the curiosity got the better of him and Kyungsoo couldn’t hold back questioning further.

“Does he know?” He elaborated after receiving a raised eyebrow from Baekhyun. “Did you tell him, about that?”

A shake of his head was all Kyungsoo needed to know why Baekhyun was in the state he was. He didn’t need any more details, his conscious could make the rest of it up.

After washing up the dishes and cleaning a little here and there, he left Baekhyun to drown in his own misery and thought he’d drop by to see how the other half was doing.

He shouldn’t have been surprised when he walked into Chanyeol screaming at the monitor as he (once again) lost in a game of StarCraft.

After a few good knocks at the door Chanyeol finally noticed Kyungsoo’s presence and welcomed him in, closing the game and spinning around on his chair to face the smaller boy.

“You seem to be doing fine?” Kyungsoo tried his hardest to speak in a happy tone, he wasn’t going to let Chanyeol know how Baekhyun was doing, he wasn’t going to ruin Baekhyun’s plans like that.

“Did you hear?” he almost scoffed. “Baekhyun’s just throwing a strop, it’s not his first time. I’ll give him a few days and we’ll be fine again.” Chanyeol’s mouth formed the same wide grin, the kind that holds no secrets, as genuine as ever. Clueless, Kyungsoo thought.

As much as he could imagine the scene, he couldn’t quite imagine it from Chanyeol’s eyes, maybe it was because of the height difference, Chanyeol’s view just seemed to be at another level, mentally, as well as physically. He couldn’t help but question, just so that he could know both sides, although he knew this wasn’t the same cliche kind of ‘two sides to every story’.

“He just told me that we should stop, I don’t know what pissed him off that day and I still don’t really know what I did wrong but he looked pretty sad about it. I just took it and left for the time being because I didn’t want him to get all fire-y at me, ‘cause you know, that’s my job.” Chanyeol shrugged, little did he know, that day was their last real day together.

He didn’t tell him that their souls were intertwined from birth, he didn’t tell him that one day he would disappear right in front of Chanyeol’s eyes, he didn’t tell him that he would be Chanyeol’s sacrifice. He wanted to disappear as his unknown saviour, so Chanyeol would feel no guilt, no remorse for being the cause of his eclipse, so that he could carry on living as usual, thinking that the person who will flash in light was him preparing to start his next life, rather than the life that was leaving for him to continue living.

It wasn’t until weeks passed and Baekhyun still refused to answer Chanyeol’s calls, to respond to his texts, to open the door (despite the pass code never changing, Chanyeol just never thought to punch his own birthday into the lock) that Chanyeol began to really worry. Baekhyun was tearing himself up inside trying to stay away from Chanyeol and Kyungsoo was having just as much trouble trying to help him out, he had to pretend that he didn’t know what Baekhyun was doing, pretend to not be able to contact him and pretend to not be able to get into his apartment, then report everything back to Baekhyun every night because he was just that worried about Chanyeol and couldn’t bare to not hear any news of him for even a day.

Regret took over every inch of Chanyeol’s body as he listened to the voicemail service lady’s voice for the hundredth time that day. It was only just past noon and he was losing it. He refused to meet up with Kyungsoo unless Baekhyun appeared as well, and Kyungsoo knew there was no way that was happening so Chanyeol stayed vented up in his own apartment until he felt like he was going to explode and raced off to Baekhyun’s place.

Just past noon but the clouds were grey and the sky was dark, Chanyeol didn’t have his contacts in and rushed out too quickly, forgetting to take his glasses with him. He didn’t notice the blur in his vision, assuming his tears would’ve made even perfect eyesight the same.

The blurred red was enough to tell him there was a stop light, but as much as his head told him to stop his body didn’t comply, he fled through the streets, sure that beeping horns were aimed at him but he couldn’t care less, he couldn’t stop, not until he reached Baekhyun, not until he reached Baekh-

“Baekhyun!” he ran over as his eyes soaked up every little bit of the boy in front of him. He dismissed the bleak, stark white walls surrounding them, he could only see Baekhyun, he only needed to see Baekhyun.

“Where did you go, why did you leave?” Chanyeol placed a hand under the shorter boy’s cheek, turning his head upwards so they were looking directly into eachother’s eyes. He didn’t notice how his vision was suddenly perfect, how there was nothing stopping him from seeing Baekhyun this time. This one time.

Baekhyun could only hold a sorrowful smile, absorbing all of the feelings he could of this very last moment. It would be over soon, he breathed a small sigh of relief. He wouldn’t have to try anymore, he wouldn’t have to avoid him anymore, he could only stay here for so long.

He thought he could hold it out for just a little longer but Chanyeol’s quiet sobbing only made his heart wrench more, with silent whispers of “Please don’t leave me again” which Baekhyun couldn’t respond to with the answer he wanted.

He brought both hands up to bring Chanyeol’s face down just enough to press his lips against his forehead, before pulling back and looking into his eyes and breathing out a barely audible “Good bye.”

“He’s not injured it’s okay!” A faint, unfamiliar voice started to rock him back into consciousness.

“That’s a miracle, the car is practically in pieces! Look the airbag isn’t even out and he doesn’t have a single scratch on him!”

Chanyeol blinked and squinted a few times, getting used to the darkness he was waking up to, he looked down at his unharmed body and then around him, it took a few double takes to understand his surroundings. Red and blue flashing lights, sirens and people talking, masses of people crowing around him, but only one stood out. Kyungsoo was there, standing like a statue amongst the sea of others with a knowing look on his face that told him only one thing.

Baekhyun was gone.

3am and i don't really know what i'm doing but hi this has been a fic. albeit an odd and badly written one, this has been a fic okay bye.
(and just incase this didn't make much sense, basically baekhyun is chanyeol's airbag, the ~condition~ is that he's linked to chanyeol spiritually and will be chanyeol's sacrifice if chanyeol ever encounters a life-threatening situation (the car crash), baekhyun tried to leave chanyeol to make things easier but the break-up ends up being the source of baekhyun's death)
