“Your foundations look solid,” Sungyeol says, and stands up. The house was infested with dreams, no doubt. According to the mother, it was their third in as many months. The kid, L, stands on the sidewalk watching him work. Sungyeol turns.
“You ever see any of them?” he asks. They could have been classmates, if Sungyeol hadn’t dropped out to become a dream catcher.
“No.”
“Ever have any dreams?”
“No.”
He answers like it’s a test, and it gives him away. Sungyeol crosses the lawn and walks up to him, holding out his hand to demonstrate. “They’re about the size of your fist. Like rats, but worse. They prey on your mind.” He taps his forehead and L’s eyes follow. “Nothing good comes from them.”
He waits until he’s alone with the mother in the living room, writing out his receipt. “Looks like they might be attracted to your boy. Mrs. Kim, does he ever go outside at night?” She looks baffled.
“Outside?” she says. “Sometimes. He likes the night air. Why?” She studies his face sharply and Sungyeol remembers L’s blank expression, no longer purposeless. He smiles.
“It’s good that he keeps up the exercise. He’s a strapping kid.”
