"But you're the one who broke up with me," Yixing is saying, and for some reason his voice comes through as if from the other end of a very long tunnel, soft and warped. He seems miles away.

Lu Han stares studiously at the patterned lampshade in the corner of the hotel room, twists his fingers into the hem of his shirt. His leg jitters against the bedside table. "I know."

"So-you want to-"

"Talk about it?" Lu Han blurts out. He examines the sweep of Yixing's mussed-up fringe as it falls into his eyes. "Just because we're not dating anymore doesn't mean you aren't still my best friend. I want to talk to him." He swallows, throat dry. "To you."

"You're the one who broke up with me," Yixing repeats, incredulous this time. His hands bunch in the sheets of the twin bed, crease the crisp white cotton. "Look, I can't separate myself into boyfriend Yixing and best friend Yixing. People don't work like that. And even they did, I don't think I could. I need some space, alright? A lot of space." He shakes his head and glances down

For a moment, Lu Han can see, clear as day, the same dip of Yixing's head from half a world and half a month away, in a completely different hotel room-can see himself getting up to leave, we should end this dropping out of his mouth before he can stop himself.
