We got our first share of CSA harvest yesterday!  Very exciting.  :)  Our box of organic goodness had a small bouquet of fresh thyme, radishes, garlic scapes and a nice selection of early greens: red leaf lettuce, kale, arugula, spicy mesclun mix.

Now begins the unofficial CSA challenge to use everything we pick up each week.  I was thinking of ( Read more... )

All those fresh veg sounds wonderful!!

You are inspiring me here - I think I should set a goal to rid myself of x-number of things this year.

It's amazingly freeing! I recommend starting with drawers and cupboards you almost never go in. It's unbelievable how much in there you really don't need, and then it's like Christmas once it's cleaned out and you can used it to put away things you love and actually use on a regular basis.

My eye got caught on 'Hitchcock!' There was a Hitchcock factory/warehouse/mill near where we lived in Connecticut and my mom and I would go every now and then when I was little. You could get really good deals on little goof ups like one too many flowers painted on or something equally barely noticeable. We have a lot of Hitchcock furniture (perfect and a few accident pieces) and now, sadly, the mill closed. What does your chair look like? What color is it? I know they had particular imagery styles that they repeated (little seaport, flowers, harvest, etc.)

Oooh, and you mentioned CSA... I forget what that stands for, but that's when you buy a share of a local farmer's crop and you get a weekly or monthly chunk of produce, right? I would really like to do that one day. It seems like such a great deal!

My chair is a little three legged side chair. It's painted black and has gold bands painted around the spindle legs, and fruit stenciled on the back rest. I read Hitchcocks will all have a factory mark though, and mine doesn't. Reportedly, on the real deal, the gold bands only go half way around the legs, and mine go all the way around. Plus, mine has an upholstered seat, and Hitchcocks are usually wood or cane seats.

As for CSA, yes. It stands for Community Supported Agriculture, and it took me a couple years on a wait-list to finally get a share on the farm I wanted in on. If you're interested in seeing what's available around you, this is a great website:

www.localharvest.org

They keep a national database of CSA's, farms, farmers markets, and all sorts of local food options.
