"A recent study quoted by Dr. Peter Gomes in The Good Book found that 38 percent of Americans polled were certain the Old Testament was written a few years after Jesus' death. Ten percent believed Joan of Arc was Noah's wife. Many even thought the epistles were the wives of the apostles."

When you see such studies you need to remember that a large fraction of people don't take these things seriously. Also, while I've heard the "Joan of Arc" claim a fair number of times no study that I've ever seen on religious knowledge ever asked that question, so I'm skeptical of the claim. Note also that it is likely that that 10% is just joking around. For a fairly detailed, rigorous, and generally appalling study about these issues see http://pewforum.org/Other-Beliefs-and-Practices/U-S-Religious-Knowledge-Survey.aspx . Among other interesting details about that study apparently atheists generally know more about religion than most other Americans.
