but I kept on asking "Why her?" I mean, here is a world in which the wizards are organized, they have rank, and there is, IIRC, some kind of ruling body. So, who the hell came up with the brilliant idea of sending two clueless kids off to battle Mr. Evil?Because every wizard has to do this. That's the point. Wizards exist so that the Powers can mitigate the damage done by the Lone Power, and prolong things before entropy and death destroys this universe. This is explained. Every wizard has to go on an ordeal where they personally battle the Lone Power or one of his representatives.
