I think the problem is that the D/s, explicit or inferred, is not what makes these books so popular. Christian/Edward are able to give a girl pretty much anything--both physically (being a billionaire helps...) and otherwise. They become obsessed with the object of their affections, to the point of having little interest in anything beyond her. Really, it's a wonder Grey's empire doesn't collapse, with how often he leaves work to go bug Anastasia whenever she steps over one of his arbitrary lines. And they spend all day emailing each other.

The women just sort of accept the men's controlling tendencies (despite the fact that Ana and Christian, in books 2-3, have a supposedly vanilla relationship. I don't want people to see their partners' controlling them in the context of vanilla as good, desirable, or normal. Ana dislikes Christian's control freakery (outside of bed), but she still goes along with it. Is this really a good message to send?
