If we're going to be talking about self-help books, may I recommend Richard Wisemand's "59 Seconds"? Wiseman is a psych professor at the University of Hertfordshire. The book looks at a lot of common self-help claims and then examines what the actual research says. It turns out (probably not that surprisingly) that a lot of commonly repeated self-help claims are utterly wrong. The book isn't a complete downer since it also includes relevant tidbits that have been shown to work in controlled settings.
