Ah yes, the GREATEST of all mech anime is back! And I have that warm fuzzy feeling back that reminds me of the good old days when anime was rare and there was only one shop in glasgow that sold it on VHS. Don't forget that the original Jetfire figure was infamously just a repainted version of one of the Valkyries. More than a few exist with the original Macross logos on the wings and side (and how sad am I for knowing that).

Though there are actually people dumb enough to think that it's ripping off Transformers? Really?!

The reason that the Jetfire (Skyfire in Japan) toy was never released outside of Japan was the fact that it was a BLATANT rip-off of the Macross Valkyrie fighter.. so much so, the comic and cartoon version had to remodel him something into truly craptacular. :)

Anyone who says anything about Macross ripping off TFs is either sorely misinformed or mind-numbingly ignorant.

Outside of the aforementioned Skyfire / Jetfire malarkey, it's a vastly different concept. And it's not like transforming robots in animation even began with TFs in the first instance.

Actually, the dismissal you mention really does sound like something the typical internet-trolling Transformers fan would say. It can be the most idiotic fandom in the world at times...
