ok so me and greg were talking about this a week or so ago. we were trying to figure out who the top 5 most influencial bands of the 90's were. so if you read this..post your opinion
( Read more... )
definitely radiohead. nirvana because they brought something other than hair metal to mainstream (if we are talking about what is influencial on mainstream music). weezer had emo influences but there were "emo" bands before weezer even showed up. dork rock is what i'd like to think they influenced, because so many bands started sounding like them after that. that's a good list, but i'd probably throw sonic youth in there somewhere too.
five most influential bands of the 90's. that's a little difficult when all of these "grunge" type bands were comming out of seattle. nirvana for some reason is most remembered from the early ninties... while grohl is a really good drummer and cobain is a really good writer, i don't think they were as influential as everyone made them seem after cobain's death. even though it seems to be almost timeless, well in today's standards which does not say much, honestly.
radiohead (given), sonic youth, metallica in the 90's was a good band for their genre as was pearl jam and the smashing pumpkins and even soundgarden. i really think sleater-kinney played an important role durring this time.
other possibilities: Turbonegro fugazi the manic street preachers sunny day real estate
i was going to say sunny day real estate but i didn't want to ramble. if someone wanted to pinpoint an influencial emo band, they would definitely be it. the whole emo thing came into play around their time.
haha i need to chill out on my rambling, i do that too frequently, but i completely agree about sunny day real estate being an important band in the emo genre during this time.
