The twilight deepened, turning my skin pale with the withering light. He shone as usual, his skin like gleaming marble in the shadows, reflecting whatever light there was. His eyes, liquid topaz, stared back into mine.
His hands, fingers long and thin; an artist’s hands; caressed my cheek, gently lifting a piece of my hair from my face and hooking it behind my ear. I smiled, enjoying the cool of his skin where it touched mine. He leaned in; the only warmth he could offer in his eyes, and pressed his lips to my own. The reaction was instantaneous. It felt like several bombs had gone off behind my eyelids, a scorching heat coursed through me, and I shuddered as his arms wrapped around me, pulling me against his stone chest. The world fell away and there was only him and I and where our mouths met.
It lasted for a lot less time then I wanted it to, he pulled away and I reached for him again, desperate for the contact and the closeness he had just removed. He raised his hands, gently holding me off while he regained a hold on that tenuous control that kept him from destroying me unconsciously. My breathing came in gasps, my head swimming and the sparkles not quite fading from my vision. I shuddered in a breath, and he raised an eyebrow, before smiling at me with my favorite smile.
“Bella,” he whispered, his velvet voice strained, “I…” he trailed off, reaching out to touch my hair and then he smiled again. There was something behind this smile; the warmth in his eyes had changed, it was no longer an emotion I recognized.
“Edward?” I asked, my voice still trembling with whatever he had done to me, “what is it?”
He smiled again, its familiar lopsided-ness comforting, but at the same time worrying. “You know I love you, right?” he asked, his voice slightly calmer.
“Of course.”
“Then promise me, you will never ever forget that.”
“What’s going on Edward?” I demanded, and he flinched as if I’d said something that hurt him and he turned away from me, to look out over the meadow. The fireflies were just appearing, their blinking lights like tiny, floating stars hovering within reach of human hands.
“I have to go,” he murmured, pulling me to him, kissing the top of my head and then lifting my chin with a finger, his eyes quelling any protest I could make. “I won’t be gone long, I promise. I just have some things to tie up.”
“Don’t go, please,” I begged, suddenly terrified that he would never come back. The sense of premonition combined with the suddenness of his announcement startled me. I couldn’t manage to breathe properly and Edward looked concerned that I was going into hysterics. I managed to regain control, and carefully spoke again, “I want to go with you,” I said, petulantly, as if I was five years old again, and not almost nineteen.
“You can’t,” he answered simply, and stood. “I’ll be back in a few days. I love you Bella, stay safe.”
He was gone then, leaving me to find my own way back to the road where we’d parked my truck. Which, knowing me, would be next to impossible, even if it had been light out still.
“Bella?” A voice questioned and relief washed through me, as Alice appeared in the clearing, concern evident on her features.
“Oh Alice,” I cried, and she smiled. “Where’s he going?”
“Bella,” Alice began, wringing her hands together, “I can’t tell you, he’s made me promise; made us all promise. Come with me, I’ll get you home to Charlie.”
“I’m not going,” I muttered and Alice shrugged, “I want to know where he’s going, he said he had some things to tie up…do you know what that means? I can’t believe he just left me here…”
“He knew I was coming Bella,” Alice admonished, “and like I said, I can’t tell you, the only person who can is Edward, he’s made us all promise not to say anything.”
“I just want to know why,” I said forlornly, looking at her. Alice nodded, understanding in her eyes, “why would he just leave?”
Alice smiled gently, and wrapped an arm around my shoulders, “come, I’ll take you home to Esme, she’ll make you something warm to drink and we can wait for Edward together.”
Title: Icons of Self-Indulgence

Pairings/Characters: Usual pairings, Cullens, Bella, Mike Newton

Notes: Mike's reaction to Bella's rebirth.
It was everywhere, in the luxurious clothes, the fast cars, the fancy computers, the silver chess pieces I’m sure they had. The ridiculous amounts of money they threw at whatever they wanted to, the way they seemed to be able to make things appear out of nothing. Even their voices sounded rich, like the velvet toned voice that spoke to me now, the way they smiled at each other as if they knew some big secret that no one else did.
How was I supposed to compete with something like that? All I had was a shitty Sentra, and the last time I’d gone shopping I’d bought everything off the sale rack. I’m not rich, not capable, and compared to the boys, not even remotely close in looks. I nodded aimlessly at Edward, not really registering what he was saying since he wasn’t paying attention to me out of anything but courtesy to Bella, who sat beside him, snuggled up against his shoulder, her face lit by an eerily familiar alabaster glow.
It hit me then, Bella was different, something had happened since she’d last been in Forks. It had been well over a year since the Cullens had left the small town, taking Bella with them as she was married to Edward, and they’d come back for the funeral. The thought of the funeral made me wince, unable to hide the sadness that spiked for a moment when I thought about the waste of a life.
Bella cringed in sympathy, her eyes catching mine for the first time all day and I gasped. Her eyes were the same topaz color as the rest of the Cullens, darker then Edward’s still, but definitely on the same color wheel. She looked away then, and I waited for the familiar blush to steal over her features, but it never came, she just looked embarrassed, as opposed to actually being embarrassed and it being demonstrated by the flush of her cheeks.
I opened my mouth to say something, but nothing came and then I realized that the entire table was watching me. Edward had an arm very protectively around Bella’s shoulders and his eyes burned into mine. Alice and Jasper looked like they were ready to run at a moment’s notice. Dr. Cullen and his wife were placid as ever but still watchful, and Emmett and Rosalie looked wary. I cleared my throat and smiled at Bella, reaching out to take her hand in sympathy, but she deftly moved her hand so that mine didn’t touch hers and landed instead on her sweater covered shoulder.
I stood, and left the table then, feeling their eyes on my back as I walked the length of the cafeteria to the door to step out into the drizzle.
