It is said that in the face of adversity, one's true colors can be seen. Clearly, Aerith's colors never rang truer, glowed brighter, than when she was facing terrible danger or trouble. Her optimistic, upbeat, cheerful attitude brings her friends closer and lifts them up when things are looking grim. Be it because of her Centra heritage, or perhaps it is just her nature, Aerith's level of empathy and compassion towards people, and her friends especially, can be considered motherly. More often than not, it is these characteristics that has caused numerous individuals to call her 'Mother', however Aerith does nothing to stop this confusion. At times, because of her general kind and trusting nature, she can come across as a bit naïve.
Beneath the kindness and the sympathetic selflessness is a stronger, vibrant fighter. While a bit of a damsel in distress, she maintains that is can take care of herself, having been raised in the slums, and is capable of fighting off ShinRa troops. Oblivious to the danger she finds - or puts - herself in, she is willing to put herself at risk to save others regardless of what the consequences may be in the end. Protective of her friends, she does all she can to assure that no harm comes to them.

First and foremost, Aerith's skills as a healer are extraordinary. Be it because of her being a Cetra or from the Holy Materia she carried with her, her white magic skills are greater than any other's on the planet. Secondly, it is hard to ignore her keen sense of empathy towards others, which gives her a strong sense of the thoughts and feelings of others. This gift allows her to connect with others on a deeper level, building friendships that become strong and deeply rooted. Not to say that it also comes in handy in reading opponents and those seeming on the 'bad' side. Thirdly, Aerith is powerfully connected to the Planet. Being a Cetra, she feels what the planet feels, giving her a sense of the Lifestream is feeling or doing. Last, but not least, Aerith is rather cunning and clever, having been able to use a variety of tactics to prevent ShinRa from capturing her for years.

For all her goodness, there is a major flaw in Aerith's character: her naivety. Her trusting nature and belief that there is goodness in everybody's heart can often lead her into trouble, being unable to see when she is being manipulated. While her heart is in the right place, Aerith has the capacity to do 'evil' or 'wrong' acts if lead to believe that they are 'good' and 'just'. Her secondary flaw is her blatant disregard for her own safety. Often she will throw herself into a situation or battle to defend her friends or innocent people with little to no regard to the outcome or consequences of her own actions.

Aerith was born from one of the last remaining Cetra, Ifalna, and Professor Gast Faremis in Icicle Inn on February 7th. However, when she was barely twenty days old, Professor Hojo tracked down Gast, killed him and captured Ifalna and Aerith. The two became subject to numerous experiments by Hojo and ShinRa. Seven years, Ifalna and Aerith escaped, but Ifalna was greatly wounded and only made it as far as Midgar. Dying on the train tracks within the Slums, Ifalna gave the young Aerith to Elmyra Gainsborough just before she died. From there, Elmyra raised Aerith through the years and eventually ShinRa was able to locate her again. Though ShinRa continued to try to capture her, they never succeed. Tseng of the Turks made several attempts to persuade her to join ShinRa instead of kidnapping her, but his words fell on deaf ears. As Aerith grew, she continued to hear voices of the Planet speaking to her, and along with Tseng's visits, became aware of her heritage as the last Cetra.
Aerith lived with Elmyra in Sector 5 in the Midgar Slums, and even though people claimed nothing could grow in the slums, because the Mako Reactors drained all the life out of Midgar's surrounding areas, she managed to grow her own flowers in the Sector 5 Church due to the presence of the Lifestream there. Aerith tended to the flowers on a regular basis, selling them around Midgar. It wasn't until Aerith was fifteen-year-old when she first meet Zack. It all started when he 'fell from the sky' into her church and at first mistakes himself as being in heaven and Aerith as an angel. Aerith quickly corrects him and, as a repayment for saving him, Zack suggests a date. Aerith brushes him off, but she shows him around all the same, and Zack buys Aerith her trademark pink hair ribbon.
Unable to escape her heritage as the last Cetra, she is caught between AVALANCHE and ShinRa, both parties attempting to capture her. Eventually, she is captured and taken to her church to meet a woman named Elfé, who gives her a proposition. Elfé tells Aerith that AVALANCHE wants to bring down ShinRa and protect the Promised Land from them, and thus it is in her best interests to ally with them. After a series of events, Aerith escapes from Elfé and AVALANCE. Sometime later, Zack returns to meet with Aerith one last time. He helps Aerith build a wagon to carry flowers around to sell to people. Aerith then asks Zack for "a few tiny wishes", and Zack has her write them down for him. Five years go by after Zack disappears, and Aerith has done well selling flowers in Midgar. During these years she has written Zack 89 letters though he never receives 88 of them. It is also during this time that Aerith takes up tending flowers in her church - the only place in Midgar that these flowers seem to bloom without trouble.
It was a chilly afternoon that she came across a certain spiky-headed blonde while out selling flowers on the street. They metet again when Cloud, much like his predecessor Zack, falls into her church on a failed attack on the Sector 5 Reactor, and wakes up on the flower bed. Aeris asks him to become her bodyguard to protect her against ShinRa and the Turks. It is from this humble - albet unusual - beginnings that a series of friendships bloom between Cloud, Tifa, Barrett, Marlene and several others who join her on their quest that eventually leads to the Forgotten Capital. It is here that Aerith meets her fate at the hands of Sephiroth and is laid to rest in the pool that rests in the center of the city.
Since rejoining the Lifestream, Aerith has worked to help those who have also joined the Lifestream and those who have not. In several instances, she has visited Cloud in dreams and visions, offering encouragement and positive words. Even in battle she has aided her friends, becoming the last link in the chain that lead him up to destroying Bahamut SIN. But, with the sudden chain of events, Aerith is separated once more from the Lifestream and the Planet, becoming alive once more.
