don't even really know what an artist is for anymore. Like, what am I supposed to say? Is that sad?
Artists are for making useful things or concepts more appealing while helping them retain their original character. A rectal thermometer? Not so fun. A Hello Kitty rectal thermometer? Well that's different. :) Disquieting political concerns? Eh, I dunno... Disquieting political concerns contained in a funny cartoon? Well, that's different too. :)
I don't think there is a good answer for this, really. I mean, my ultimate desire was (is?) to be an author. So, I considered an English degree, but realized that I wouldn't be able to survive on the non-existent salary of a beginning writer. So, I chose to get a degree in teaching, thinking that it would be useful AND I'd have time for writing. And now? I'm a temp at a natural gas pipeline company.
I feel like I wasted 4.5 years of my life. I feel like I'm not doing anything that makes me happy. I mean, I'm making some money, but ugh.
And, I just realized that this had nothing to do with your post. *laugh* But I don't feel like deleting and starting over.
It sucks that your undergrad didn't prepare you for the real world, though, that is probably true of many, many undergrad programs. I certainly wasn't prepared for teaching. *shudder*
To make a long comment short (too late), I hope you find that inspiration you're looking for.
