Sakurada Rai could see what normal people couldn’t see, but he always kept quiet about it. Only his brother knows about his ability. Rai wasn’t scared of them. He’ll either pretend not to see them or he’ll ignore them. He believed that if he don’t bother them, they won’t bother him too. However, it all changed when he met her.
He was thirteen years old when he met her. She had a short blond hair, and she wore a light blue dress that matched her eyes. He frowned though, when he noticed that she wasn’t wearing any shoes. He stepped closer and asked her politely why she was standing in front of his house. She just stayed quiet and moved away when he offered his hand to help her stand.
She didn’t say a word but she took his offering hand. When she held his hand, he noticed instantly that she wasn’t human. He didn’t say a word though; instead he brought her to his room and smiled gently at her. The little girl looked around before she took a seat on his bed and stared emotionlessly at him.
“What’s your name? My name is Rai.” he said while offering his hand to her.
The girl continued to look at him before she nodded shyly. Rai looked a bit disappointed when she didn’t accept his hand, but he didn’t give up yet. He’s really curious about this girl. He really wanted to know why she was here, and he wanted to help her if he can.
“Are you alone?” he asked again as he fumbled with his necklace. He got it from Kai, and he has been wearing it since then. It was a simple chain with a small bottle attached to it. The girl suddenly stretched her hand and grabbed his necklace suddenly, making Rai stumble and chocked a bit. She stopped when she realized what she was doing. Rai coughed a bit before he steadied his breath. He frowned at her before he shook his head.
“Don’t do that again. If you want to see this, all you have to do is ask.” he said as he took of his necklace and put the necklace on her neck carefully, “it suits you.”
He didn’t know why he gave that to her. Usually he was stingy when it comes to his personal belonging, but today, he felt like he really wanted to give it to her, as she needs it more than him. The girl looked up at him and for the first time she smiled at him. She was so beautiful when she smiled, and Rai couldn’t help but smile back at her.
“…thank you…” she said in a small voice “ it was so lonely out there… no one answers my call, even though I want to follow them, something held me on the place…. You are the first one who talk to me…”
Rai was silent for a moment. He didn’t have a heart to tell her about the truth. No one would talk to her because they couldn’t see her, but he didn’t know why her soul couldn’t rest. He dared himself to take her hand and squeezed it gently. She was as cold as ice.
“ Do you have any regrets here?” he asked carefully.
She just shook her head before she answered quietly, “I don’t remember a thing …”
Rai sighed at that. It would be hard for him to help her if she cannot remember anything. He then just stayed silent and watched the girl silently from the corner of his eyes. She was beautiful, no matter how many times he look at her.
“Do you remember something? Like how you ended up in front of my house?” He tried a different approach.
“…I’m waiting for someone, I think… but I can’t remember who he is… but I think he wears the same pendant as you …”
Rai was quiet after that. The other person who wears the same pendant with him is his brother. There is no way that other people could have that pendant because it was custom made. His brother is the one who made them. He then told the girl to wait while he retrieved his brother’s photo album. He returned and put the album on the girl’s lap carefully.
The girl looked at him confusedly, but Rai just shook his head and motioned her to open the album. It contained all the picture of his brother and all his classmates from the elementary school. He remembered that one time Kai had mentioned to him about a girl who rarely goes to school because she has a weak heart. He was too busy with his thoughts that Rai didn’t realize that the girl was staring at him now. A soft touch from her was enough to make him jolt in surprise.
“Do you remember something?” he asked after he recovered from his shock.
The girl nodded and pointed a picture. It was the picture of his brother. ‘Just like I thought’ he said bitterly to himself. He forced himself to calm down and waited for her to speak again.
“I … had always like him … but I never had a chance to tell him about my feeling … I promised myself that I will tell him when my operation succeed, but I think I never made it, didn’t I?” The girl smiled sadly.
Rai couldn’t help but pull her into his embrace. He patted her head gently and whispered comforting words to her. “I’m sorry that I’m not the one who you are waiting for. Maybe you see his features in me, but I’m nothing like him… I wish that I could ease your pain …”
He pitied her. There was something about her that made him want to help her. He was thinking so hard to find a way to help her when the girl suddenly smiled and looked at him with teary filled eyes. She touched his cheek softly and caressed it gently.
“Thank you …” she whispered gently.
Rai could felt that a drop of tear had fallen on his cheek, but he did nothing to wipe them away. Why must it end up like this? He still wanted to know about her better. He could see her beginning to disappear, and without thinking he hugged her tighter. He knew that it won’t change anything, but at least he tried. Maybe the miracle will happen; maybe God will show some mercy on him and let her stay with him for awhile.
“Can you wait for awhile? You can possess my body and confess to my brother.”
“Is that really okay?” she asked softly, even though there is a hope in her tone.
“Yes. Please do so. I will lead you to his school. He should be finished by now.”
He got a cold feeling when she entered his body. It’s weird, and his mind was blank for a moment before he felt her presence inside him. He felt nauseated when he was overwhelmed by a sudden feeling of loneliness, sadness, and regrets that rushed into his body. He calmed down for a moment before he close his eyes as he was about to sleep.
“Kai, there is someone who want to talk to you.” He told his brother who was a bit confused. ‘The rest is up to you,’ he said to the girl in his mind.
The rest of the event was a blur to him. He knew that she had managed to confess to his brother. And he couldn’t help to feel a little jealous of him. If only he entered the same school with his brother at that time, maybe something will change. But the past is the past; there is nothing he could do to change it.
He could recall the last words from her before she let go of his body. She was standing in front of him, with a bright smile painted on her lips. It was the first time he saw her smiling like that, and he was happy because he knew that this smile was reserved for him only. Not for his brother.
“Thank you … and good bye Rai. It’s nice to meet you.” she told him before she disappeared from his sight.
Sometimes, when his friends ask him about his first love, he would only smiled mysteriously at them.
“I never know her name, but one thing I remember is that she has the brightest smile of all”
