The Big Read reckons that the average adult has only read 6 of the top 100 books they’ve printed.
1.) Look at the list and bold those you have read.
2.) Italicize those you intend to read.
3.) Underline those you LOVE.
4.) Put an asterisk next to the books you’d rather shove hot pokers in your eyes than read.

Re: Catcher in the Rye---a detestable book. Didn't understand why everyone was so keen to read this and I wouldn't have bothered after the first five pages---maybe the first three---if reading this hadn't been mandatory in our high school sophomore English class.

Re: Middlemarch---Right with you: this has to be the most boring book on the planet. It was part of our summer reading assignment for senior English (still high school) and the first day of class our teacher asked, "Now, who of you has re-read Middlemarch recently?"
Recently! Get her, would you? Recently! As one of the class wags riposted, "Nobody re-reads a book like Middlemarch recently!"

I know we had to read Far From the Madding Crowd and could get extra credit for reading Jude the Obscure and/or The Oxbow Incident in addition; some of my class mates managed to read all three.

And, seraphinawitch, I am completely with you on The Da Vinci Code.

I've never understood why Gatsby makes these lists; The Beautiful and the Damned impressed me when I ( ... )
