Fellow survivor here. You may or may not know I'm a GameFAQs moderator, and so we get a lot of people using rape that way.
We delete it under the "offensive" rule, and depending on how bad it is, can warn or suspend them. It does help being able to kick some virtual ass over it. *hug*
Call me weird, but as you know I've been molested/raped myself over a five year span by my mom's ex b/f beginning pretty much immediately after my father's death. The way I look at it, I refuse to give a word that much power or refuse to give my abuser that kind of power either. I simply refuse to give in to fear.
And I am happy you've been able to deal and move forward. I'm still stuck dealing with this shite in therapy and elsewhere, so it's still something that bothers me a lot.
You are a strong woman and you can do this. I really think so. I think you can do anything. I hope that day comes soon where you feel the way we think of you and see what we see in you and those things simply become ghosts in your past and you feel no more fear.
Just remind yourself of this definition when you see it used in-game:
4. an act of plunder, violent seizure, or abuse; despoliation; violation: the rape of the countryside
That's what they mean. They don't mean to make it personal or to torment you with horrible flashbacks. This is just a word with multiple meanings- and they don't mean to imply the other meanings when they use the term.
It's still an act of plunder though, which really isn't much better than sexual assault. What they intend doesn't really matter either...intent isn't magical. For a rape victim to hear someone yell "LOL IM GONNA RAPE U" in a duel or whatever, I'm pretty sure it's going to be triggering for them. The intent is meaningless.
Like I said, I don't really understand how using the #4 definition makes the word better somehow. The whole "act of plunder, violent seizure, or abuse" part kinda tips you off to hey this is a nasty word!!
You don't get to speak for everyone who uses that word. Maybe some of the people you know mean the plunder term, but I've point-blank asked people too, and no, what they meant was sexual assault rape.
Assuming that everyone means the same thing is naive at best, and deliberately disingenuous at worst.
I specifically said "when you see it in-game". Yes, that is what they mean when they use it in online games. No one is thinking about, or trying to trigger, someone else's past. Maybe try re-reading my reply when you're in a less defensive and hostile mood.
This is completely unrelated to this post, but I'm posting here since it's your most recent entry. Just wanted to let you know this is Brienze from Lost Souls. :) Just added you!

It seems like some people have a woman problem and that messes them up. Boo to them.
