Wow, I really complained a lot. I promise I didn't hate the episode as much as my griping makes it look. It was an average episode, with some good bits and some annoying bits. It's just that the good bits didn't have much to talk/think about, and the annoying bits evidently really annoyed me. Plus I wrote it after the promo, and that was a really frakking annoying promo. (Although I later learned that, like the other promos so far this season, there was a short clip from ep 5 snuck in. I'm not sure what the deal is with that.)

Wow, I didn't realize I hadn't responded to ANY of your posts this season! I guess we've been talking outside of the Internet? Also, I haven't really had much to say ( ... )

2. In that vein, let’s talk about character traits and why certain characters work for me and others don’t. In rewatching I have remembered that there are two things I really dislike: A) “tough guy” characters, and B) characters that ingratiate themselves into other people’s lives CONSTANTLY. I’m sure there are more ( ... )

The second part: characters that ingratiate themselves into others’ lives CONSTANTLY. You should know by now that I really hate this. That was why I hated West. Part of it is that the character is so irritating, but another, bigger, part of it is that the other character is not saying, “Dude, get out of my face,” somehow the other character is eventually charmed by something that I personally find very off-putting. I think you were initially turned off by August because of this? (So was I, and have found little to redeem him so far, though mostly due to my aversion to the Pinocchio thing.) Henry and Emma both do this, and it DRIVES ME CRAZY and keeps me from really liking the characters. I feel like on some level it is sloppy writing because it just shoves them into a scene repeatedly ( ... )

3. Plots! I have to say it: I feel like for most of season one, this show was very badly scripted. I said above that I am confused; no matter how many plates are spinning, I should be able to tell what’s going on and I can’t. Maybe some of it is me. I feel like the decision to tell Snow and Charming’s story in pieces of flashbacks out of order was a bad one, it veers dangerously close to retcons. It also gets old after a while. Towards the beginning, Rumple/Gold showed a high interest in names and in babies, which I felt like was close to his character, but that petered out after a while ( ... )
