(Btw, if that plan doesn't work, I'm going to ask whether Sunday/Monday would work for just meeting up in San Fran for dinner and/or such.)

The difference between Merced and SF is that for Merced, I would drive my car, and for SF (if you're talking about the city itself and not just near the city), I wouldn't want to drive (Public transportation is easy enough - I took the ferry to visit with Shannon and Darkness).
