I think that you grew up in a house with dogs in it, so you are accustomed to relating the feeling of home to a residence with a dog in it. It doesn't surprise me at all that you would like a dog now, when you are in a bad place.
Personally, I would advise you to get a second cat if only for the fact that the dog would demand and require so much attention that you would lose the cuddly cat you know and love. The cat would become far more independent simply because you cannot devote as much time to it as it would like. Dogs are also significantly more expensive than cats when considering upkeep. They cost more in vet bills and are more likely to get hurt than a cat.
If you do feel the need to get a new animal to comfort you, I would suggest a second cat.
Also, Hollywood hasn't gotten her new cat yet. I have visited him a couple of times, but won't get to take him home until after the Easter holiday. He is SO adorable, and loves the bed that I bought him. Also, we might actually have two kitties.
